Neil Gaiman’s Stop Motion Coraline Trailer Directed by Henry Selick

It’s been a while since there has been an animated film that I’ve been really looking forward to, but a stop motion movie directed by Henry Selick (James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas) and based on a book by Neil Gaiman is definitely something worth getting excited about. I liked all the early footage that I saw from the upcoming movie Coraline, but nothing could prepare me for this new theatrical trailer, which has just gone online over at Yahoo!. It looks absolutely fantastic!
I guess it’s hard to avoid getting a bit of a Tim Burton vibe from some of it, but overall this looks so much better than Burton’s last animated movie Corpse Bride, and the art style and story should be more than enough to distinguish it from Selick’s previous flicks. Coraline hits theatres on February 6th, 2009, and will also be playing in 3-D. You can bet I won’t be missing out on it… will you? Check out the new trailer below and see what you think.

Incredibly excited for both this and Where The Wild Things Are. Two odd children classics in the making, methinks.

Posted by Bob The Slob on November 20th, 2008Ok, let me just make sure I get it: A girl gets lost in a creepy, mystical world (Alice in Wonderland) that has a bit of a goth edge too it (”Tim Burton’s”-style, American McGee’s Alice & that “dark” Alice remake Burton was supposedly making, Emily the Strange). She gets there by crawling through a doorway (like Being John Malkovich, the only Gaiman book I read: Neverwhere, Nightmare Before Christmas, blah, blah, blah). This world is not as great as she had bargained for and at the end she learns a life changing moral (every American animated feature in existence). Wow, this sounds like such an original and arresting masterpiece! (Wait up Bob the Slob…I need a ride to Hot Topic!)
I will say (with a lack of sarcasm) that I’m glad they’ll still make stop-motion animation but really Svankmajer and The Brothers Quay trump all when it comes weird, creepy, and beautiful.
Posted by Ryan M. on November 20th, 2008I was going to bitch about how this was not original at all but Ryan sort of stole my thunder…bastard. He’s right though. How many god damn movies have we seen that feature kids who enter some parallel universe through a random area in their room? Laaame.
Posted by Neil M on November 20th, 2008Svankmajer & The Brothers Quay are about as far from the mainstream as possible though. Coraline is aiming to straddle the middle ground, kinda like Stardust.
Posted by kurt on November 20th, 2008Neil M: In terms of originality, I tend to subscribe to Ebert’s Law on that one — “It’s not what the story is about, but rather how it is about it.”
Posted by kurt on November 20th, 2008Well, I agree that a movies overall effectiveness is more heavily dependent upon the way that the story is told. However, the concept of the movie has to draw me in first before I even consider seeing it. Because I feel like this idea has been done to death, there’s no hook to get me into the theater. Not even some nice looking stop-motion.
Posted by Neil M on November 20th, 2008Totally excited for this movie!!!
I think Coraline is PERFECT for stop-motion. Henry Selick is a genius and I don’t think he’ll let us down with this movie!!
I support this Coraline movie 100%
