Max Allan Collins to Direct Two Road to Perdition Sequels

Although Sam Mendes is still best known for directing the Oscar-winning American Beauty, I think his two follow-up films, Road to Perdition and Jarhead, were quite impressive in their own right. Road to Perdition in particular is a very underrated movie, with a performance from Tom Hanks that doesn’t get mentioned often enough. Considering the fact that it was based on a graphic novel, I’m surprised the movie doesn’t get more love in general.

Well this week we have some exciting news for fans of this movie. Apparently there are two sequels in the works from the writer of the original graphic novel, Max Allan Collins. They are titled Road to Purgatory and Road to Paradise respectively, and will focus on Michael Sullivan, Jr., the son of Tom Hanks’ character in the first movie. Mendes will not be directing either of them, but instead, Collins himself will be stepping into the driver’s seat. Apparently Frank Miller has opened the door for comic book writers to step in and direct their own feature film adaptations. I’m not so sure this is a great thing, although in the case of Max Allan Collins, he has previously directed a few low budget horror films and a direct-to-video adaptation of the play Eliot Ness: An Untouchable Life. But is that really enough experience behind the camera? I guess we’ll find out soon enough, although somehow I doubt he’ll be able to compare to the work of Sam Mendes. Are you excited about these Road to Perdition sequels?

  1. Road to Perdition is by far my favorite Sam Mendes flick. That said, I don’t see why it needs a prequel, let alone two, or what they will do with it. I haven’t read the graphic novels, so maybe there’s something there. I guess the author himself is a good pick to do the prequels, if anyone is …

Anyone read the comics have any say?

  2. I have not read the graphic novels but i will say that i really enjoyed the film, although i haven’t seen it since it first came out on dvd, i do remember loving Law, Newman and Hanks. Sounds great!

  3. Road to perdition is a complete in its self and a sequel is not at all required. as it is, nothing can match upto Sam Mendes’ film. if at all this 2-part trip comes true, it should not be in totallity with the original one and should be completely separate from it.
