Samuel L. Jackson to Play Sho’nuff in The Last Dragon Remake

It was announced not too long ago that a remake of the 1985 cult classic The Last Dragon is in the works, and now we’ve finally got our first casting announcement to go with it. Samuel L. Jackson will play the villain Sho’nuff, aka The Shogun of Harlem, a role that was handled by the late Julius Carry in the original. It seems quite fitting to me, albeit a little bit predictable.

The Last Dragon is one of many classic martial arts flicks that I’ve never seen, and although it certainly has a reputation among fans, I’m not sure how much potential this holds as a studio-funded theatrical feature. The remake is being produced and written by Dallas Jackson (Uncle P), who co-founded DJ Classicz, an outfit dedicated to “urban family films” along with John Davis (Fat Albert, Daddy Day Care). It’s unclear if that’s the market they’re aiming for with this, but it is also being co-produced by The RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. (Jackson is also working with Ludacris on a remake of Fame, and a TV series called King of Malibu that is described as “an updated Fresh Prince”.) Just from checking out some of the clips of The Last Dragon on YouTube it’s pretty clear that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously… let’s hope the remake holds true to that spirit.

  1. this does not need a remake…it needs a re-release…Samuel L. Jackson is the man, but there is only one Sho’nuff!

  2. This is cheesy 80s gold, how on earth can this be re-made and no-one can replace vanity.

  3. Agreed. The best thing about this flick is that it’s basically an 80’s historical document!

  4. Jeeeziz I needs to see this one again.

  5. I loved The Last Dragon! I always watched a taped version when I stayed home sick, along with Back to the Future and Teen Wolf. Leroy Green & Marty McFly were the coolest dudes in my book. And Vanity… man, was she hot!

“You Are The Last Dragon, You Possess The Power Of The Glow!!!”

  6. Yeah, the thing that saves the original is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. I’m doubting the remake will have that same spirit, but who knows. The other cool thing, of course, was that the cast was nearly all African Americans, so that angle could still be interesting. As I remember, the martial arts scenes themselves weren’t all that impressive, so maybe that could be improved on.

  7. it could either be really bad(but good), good(great)or shit(shit)

  8. I love the original far too much! Nice.

  9. TAIMAK should be re-cast as BRUCE LEEROY!

He still looks the same (better) due to some good living!

He still lives the Martail Arts life style!

    Chceck out his website: Taimak.tv

NOW THAT WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT REMAKE *_*

  10. I second Taimak being re-cast as Bruce Leroy. He still looks great after all these years. Taimak as Bruce Leroy would rock.

    Much Love,

  11. I 3rd that!! I will not even bother seeing this movie if Taimak is not cast somewhere in this film. He brought a unique element to the original, and only he can do the same for a re-make.

  12. The cast in addition to the inspirational lessons which were taught are what make The Last Dragon the legend that it is. It is entertaining and tasteful. Each time I watch it’s, like to first time. It provokes laughter, tears and cheer. Samuel Jackson is a great choice for Sho nuff, however, Taimak Guariello is the only choice for Leroy Green.
    No Taimak..No remake!

    Vanessa B.

  13. This movie was awesome when I was a kid. The image of the guy catching a bullet with his teeth and the wavy color effects when he moved his arms around were priceless.

  14. Taimak Guarriello needs to be a part of this movie! How can you do a remake without having him participate in it? Even if he’s not picked to be Bruce Leroy, he needs to be a part of this project!

  15. I can see Samuel L. Jackson as Sho’ Nuff. He is extremely talented and he can bring the chemistry and attitude the character. A true star. This would be a fitting tribute to Julius Carry III and would do the original movie justice. I will also state that no one should be Bruce Leroy except for Taimak Guarriello. Remake/Sequel, he should definitely play Bruce Leroy. I hope it will involve Leroy Green (Bruce Leroy) maybe some years later, maybe training his own son in martial arts. Whatever the format, Taimak should be a part of it. Fans of the movie remain fans because of what he brought to his role. Any effort to revisit this character or story should involve Taimak. Not behind the scenes; on the screen as Leroy Green.

  16. Taimak should definitely be apart of the film. Looks like RZA and friends are trying to bring an updated younger energy to it so I doubt he’ll be the star. RZA has definitely expressed his want to inhance the fighting scenes with CGI. I’d bet on them using an unknown for “Bruce” Leroy Green though. Someone mentioned this guy named Ozy Reigns, probably because he has a mixtape out called The Last Dragon. Hadn’t heard of him before that, but checked him out. His music is definitely hot. He’s from Atlanta. Has some acting chops from the little that I saw as well.

  17. This movie should not be remade all over again, Taimak is the only last drgaon.

  18. The RnB singer Keri Hilson should play Vanity spot

  19. I was on youtube today when I came across this, he would be perfect for the part of Bruce Leroy!

  20. That Ashley Virgil guy is great! if anyone one should play Bruce Leroy it should be him!

    Ashley Virgil for Bruce Leroy!

  21. NO NEED FOR A REMAKE!!! it’s an 80s classic, nobody can replace Sho-nuff, Vanity etc. the movie is perfect as is – is this on Blue-ray yet?

  22. i think busta ryhmes should play shonuff. his stly n image fits the part jus right
