Live Action Ninja Scroll Coming from DiCaprio Not Wachowskis
Live action anime remakes continue to be the “in” thing in Hollywood right now (yes, even after the box office failure of Speed Racer) and Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be positioning himself to be right in the middle of it all. It was previously announced that he will be producing and possibly starring in a live action adaptation of Akira, and now this week it has been revealed that his Appian Way production company is also undertaking a Ninja Scroll feature film. Alex Tse (Watchmen, Sucker Free City) is attached to write the script.
Strangely, there was a rumour a while back that The Wachowski Brothers were secretly remaking Ninja Scroll with their upcoming movie Ninja Assassin, but it now seems that this is not the case. However, the project is being set up at Warner Brothers, so who knows… maybe there’s still a chance they’ll be involved after all? A director has not yet been named, but we all know how much Warner Brothers loves the Wachowskis. I’ve never seen Ninja Scroll and don’t know much about it other than the fact that it is really violent. What do you think, is it suitable for a live action remake?

I’m hoping this means the Akira remake is dead in the water…(No! I just checked the imdb and the date has finally been moved from ‘09 to ‘11. Dammit.)
I think Ninja Scroll is a great example of anime that can/should be adapted (unlike Speed Racer and to a lesser extent Dragonball). The story wasn’t a part of what made it good because I can’t even remember it. I do, however, remember snake-vagina. Yeah.
The only way it’ll truly embody the spirit of the anime is with an R rating though.
I’m wondering how far DiCaprio’s anime geekdom goes.
Posted by Ryan M. on October 27th, 2008I hope this live adaptation to Ninja Scroll will be faithful, with all those torture porn movies like the Saw series, Turistas and Hostel series, a faithful adaptation of Ninja Scroll would be kiddy stuff in comparison.
I think a good anime to live adaptation would be Weather Report Girl. I know it is a hentai, but really, it is more like a lesbian comedy movie. Any studio that does Weather Report Girl could even make it PG-13, they could take out all the nudity, but keep the comedy and the lesbian relationships intact. If they do make an adaptation of Weather Report Girl, they should keep the pantyhose in the movie because I think that is what would sell for a Weather Report Girl live adaptation.

Threshold Entertainment had the rights to Ninja Scroll
Posted by Bruce Darren Acosta on November 5th, 2008back in 2002 but it did not make movements but they still could be involved on the project so now Warner Bros and Leonardo DiCaprios Appian Way productions will take over the project.
Alex Tse will be writing the script so there is no news on filming yet.
Threshold could do some movies based on the video game like Darkstalkers which its a best choice for them and for the video game company Capcom.

I hope they don’t **** this up like what they did with street fighter the legend of chun-li and dragonball evolution. I like both of those a lot, but ninja scroll is undoubtably the best. It will be extremely difficult to pull this off successfully.
Posted by John Stringer on May 30th, 2009As a big fan of Ninja Scroll movie and series, I think this should be a good live action adaption from the anime. I know how bad they messed up on Dragonball but Ninja Scroll should be less challenging than that. I just hope they keep the wind slash from Jubei’s katana, it was awesome!
