Monday Morning Box Office Report: Max Payne Reigns

Another busy weekend at the box office proved that reviews don’t mean a thing when it comes to video game adaptations. Mark Wahlberg and Max Payne came out on top with an $18 million opening, dethroning Beverly Hills Chihuahua after two strong weeks at #1. Chihuahua just barely held on to the #2 spot after edging out The Secret Life of Bees, meanwhile W. opened at #4 with $10.6 million — not great, but not as bad as I had thought it might do either. Eagle Eye rounded out the top 5, and Sex Drive failed to find its audience, debuting way down at #8 with just $3.5 million. It’s probably a movie more people will discover on DVD, but with a production budget of $19 million, somehow I don’t think that’s what they had in mind.
1. Max Payne — $18M
2. Beverly Hills Chihuahua — $11.2M
3. The Secret Life of Bees — $11.1M
4. W. — $10.6M
5. Eagle Eye — $7.34M
6. Body of Lies — $6.88M
7. Quarantine — $6.3M
8. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist — $3.9M
9. Sex Drive — $3.57M
10. Nights in Rodanthe — $2.68M

Max Payne is probably the worst movie I’ve seen this year. The one thing I was expecting this movie to have was action. I guess I can’t be right all the time.
