Brad Pitt to Star in Sci-Fi Version of The Odyssey?

Sword and sandals epics are out, sci-fi is in! It seems like sci-fi slowly making a comeback in Hollywood lately, with a lot of big names laying plans to return to the genre including Hollywood heavyweight Mr. Brad Pitt. Aside from David Fincher’s upcoming movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Pitt’s last science-fiction tale was probably Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys way back in 1995. Now it seems that he has attached himself to a futuristic retelling of Homer’s classic poem The Odyssey.

According to Variety, Warner Brothers is setting up a new version of The Odyssey that will take place in outer space, with George Miller (Mad Max, Happy Feet) on board to direct. (I guess with the Justice League movie on hold, Miller’s got some free time on his hands.) I’m definitely curious, but not completely sold as of yet. It’s interesting to note that The Coen Brothers’ comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? was loosely based on The Odyssey as well… from the sounds of it, this version could be equally as different from the source material. Pitt previously starred in another adaptation of an epic Homer poem with Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy.
