Your average everyday American is NOT stupid. So whoever says they don't like reading subtitles obviously has an extremely low IQ and a smaller than average brain missing a frontal lobe. No group of Americans tell these directors or request that an American remake be made. It's Hollywood at its worst and chosen People who run Hollywood doing what they do best. These People who run Hollywood will stop at NOTHING to destroy America's relationship with Europe. It's quite obvious They are underestimating America's intelligence and internationally renowned educational ability that the average American possesses(note the word "average"). Only ignorant people don't like reading subtitles. You can also notice the differences between Hollywood made films and European made / European and American independent films. Why do you think the better films that are released today are "independent"?

This is the first time that news of a remake has almost broken my heart. I thought this movie was so beautiful, a monumental triumph over that "other" so called vampire romance movie...
I hate Holywood and everything it stands for. You can't improve on art. If you fix the mistakes, or the pacing of a story, you are taking away all the faults and nuances that make it it's own.
I will not be seeing this movie.

You don't even have to read subtitles if you're not into that. The DVD has and English dub track.

Yeah, I agree wwith this director about making remakes. We shouldn't remake a good movie just in ingorance of us Americans. If they want to c it so bad read the subtitled version like I did. I like the movie it was pretty good. I don't like Americas remakes to foreign films. It takes the good out of them. Like the movie the eye. It was a good Japanese movie, but We ruined it making a remake. The americas versions arent as good.

I lost respect for that Haneke guy when I saw the original Funny Games but that's a different story altogether... And I want to add to that list the dude who so shoddily remade his own movie The Vanishing (his name escapes me right now).
I agree, it's really messed up that they are remaking stuff sooner and sooner after the original is made. the worst is that they completely disregard everything that made the first movie good/great. No one complains about how these movies would benefit from more blood and gore, yet it seems like it's the only reason they are made. It's infuriating, really. I stopped seeing these stupid remakes a while ago because they have been nothing but a monumental waste of my time.

"Why can’t you just read the subtitles?"

Because most Americans are ridiculous borderline-retarded cocksuckers. In my state I've heard people say "I don't like reading" way too many goddamn times and they usually don't even realize how stupid that sounds. Sure, there are some times when subs don't matter and dubs are more fun (most kung-fu and anime)...but most of the time "you're an idiot."

"I wonder how he would feel if he was asked to direct the English-language remake himself, a trend that seems to be catching on with a lot of foreign remakes."

I'd never want to retread old ground. Directors don't have the time to fuck around with their careers (unlike actors who can be in fifty films) because most directors have only ten to twenty chances to make a film. I lose respect for these guys that piss around (especially that Haneke guy who did a shot for shot remake).
