Crazy Pirates 4 Rumours: Tim Burton to Direct, Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand to Co-Star?

So now that we’ve heard that Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is indeed happening and Johnny Depp has signed on to star, the rumour floodgates have officially been opened. Right off the bat we’ve got a couple of doozies courtesy of Cinema Blend, who claim to have some inside info from one of their most reliable tipsters, who, incidentally, also says to take it “with a grain of salt and a dose of pepper”. In other words, it’s probably not true.
However, it’s certainly intriguing enough that it will get people talking. Word on the street is that the next installment will introduce Captain Jack Sparrow’s brother, who might be played by either Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand! Brand, in particular, seems like he could do a great Jack Sparrow imitation, but Sacha Baron Cohen might make sense because he previously starred in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. What does that have to do with anything? Well apparently Tim Burton could be stepping in for Gore Verbinski this time around!
Obviously, those are three big names being thrown around with very little to back them up at the moment. Something tells me that Burton wouldn’t touch this franchise with a ten foot pole, and the tipster mentions that there’s a good chance Verbinski will return anyway. That said, my interest level in Pirates 4 is currently pretty low, and yet all of these things could potentially get my ass in the theatre when it’s finally released. What do you think, are these just more fanboy fantasies, or could they actually happen?

This gotta be a joke. Tim Burton? Yeah, let´s run this francise deeper into the ground.
Posted by ColinZeal on October 9th, 2008are you saying that burton would make the franchise worse? are you kidding me?
Posted by Drew on October 9th, 2008No, not kidding. Look at “Planet of the Apes” – That guy has potential to destroy anything.
Posted by ColinZeal on October 9th, 2008I HATED the first and third movie. The second pirates was ok.
Well if you’re going to take Planet of the Apes as the best example of his work, of course you’d think he’ll screw it up!
I think Burton’s style would work for this franchise, but the problem is that it would probably feel quite a bit different from the first three.
Posted by Sean on October 9th, 2008I kind of enjoyed the fact that Depp wasn’t being directed by Burton in these films, although Ed Wood is one of my favorite movies of all time I don’t think Burton should get involved with the franchise. Let Johnny have his alone time Tim (you stalker).
