Get Smart 2 Officially in Development

Although Get Smart had a strong opening weekend back in June, it seemed to quickly fade away thanks to the one-two punch of Wanted and Wall-E (not to mention numerous other blockbusters that came directly after them). Still, somehow it managed to quietly continue making money throughout most of the summer, and currently sits in the #13 position for the entire year. I’m sure you know where this is heading. When faced with the numbers, a Get Smart sequel seems inevitable, and now Warner Brothers has confirmed that Steve Carell will indeed return for a Get Smart 2. I’m assuming Anne Hathaway will be back as well, although they haven’t announced that yet.
In general, I was a bit underwhelmed with Get Smart. I felt like it tried too hard to be a summer blockbuster with big action scenes, but all I really wanted to do was laugh. The cast was great, but there just weren’t enough jokes the carry the thing. I would be interested in a sequel if we get to see more of certain characters, such the robot Hymie (played by Patrick Warburton). The weird thing is, they already did that direct-to-video sequel starring the characters Bruce and Lloyd, and I don’t think it was received very well. Has that already cheapened the Get Smart franchise? It seems like Warner Brothers are under the belief that Steve Carell’s name is what will sell it (he also just signed a three year first-look deal with Warner Brothers). What do you think, has Carell proven himself to be a reliable leading man? Will you see Get Smart 2?

Posted by Ryan M. on October 7th, 2008I agree that Get Smart was underwhelming at best but the components are there for a much better sequel! This franchise should get alot better as it goes along!
Posted by entertainmenttodayandbeyond on October 7th, 2008Steve Carell rocks!
Posted by Baychuk on October 7th, 2008Of Course! I thought it was hilarious.
Posted by Nessa on November 9th, 2008YES YES YES! Get Smart was great!
Posted by Mitchel on November 17th, 2008Sure will… I thought it was one of the better films from the blockbuster season, had the right amount of charm, comedy and action. Plus Anne Hathaway was so good to look at
Posted by Ben on January 10th, 2009I loved Get Smart. Hathaway has to be in the sequel though. She was perfect as 99, i don’t know if there is another actress alive who could have stepped into Barbara Feldon’s shoes.
I hope this series becomes a mega success.
Posted by Chris Fawkes on January 11th, 2009Saw all of the old original Get Smart episodes and it took me a bit to warm up to the new characters in the Get Smart movie. Purchased the DVD recently and together with the kids/wife have watched it at least 4 times. I am not a movie critic, so my standard is that if I enjoy the same movie multiple times, it is great. Many of the scenes were memorable and the dance with the fat lady was simply superb. The humor is tongue in cheek and I end up savoring it over and over. I hope that there really will be a sequel using the same characters/actors. The tech geeks working for CONTROL were also fantastic. Oh, agent 99 was simply dynamite. A great matchup with agent 86.
Posted by Harald Schweizer on February 22nd, 2009i thought the movie was really good. some of the humor you had to get, and if u aren’t key with dry humor then obviously it wasn’t a god movie for you. i thought the love thing with max and 99 was a major thing in the movie because it leaves viewers wantng to see what happens with them. over all i thought the movie was good. steve and anne did a great job. i LOVE hymie, even though he had a small role i love him as an actor in # 2 there has to be more of him. i will def go see number 2
Posted by victoria on March 29th, 2009Not enough jokes? I almost felt there were to many jokes. i found it hilarious but the jokes came so quick and fast i found it hard to concentrate on the story sometimes.
I was a big fan of the old get smart but this was definitely a stronger and more diverse than the series. The series was VERY repetitive.
I found Patrick Warburton and Bill Murry perfect choices for their characters. steve and anne were also good. Smarts character was different but also deeper than the original.
I agree with “entertainmenttodayandbeyond ” that “the components are there for a much better sequel!”
I look forward to number 2
Posted by visuelle humour on May 2nd, 2009I don’t get all the negative reaction to this film. That is either you like or you don’t, but it is the people who say it was nothing like the series, well duh! The series was a 1960 sitcom loosely based on a campy series of movies and the bond books that those fims were based on were written by an author in the late 1950s.
I am a big fan of the TV show Get Smart, and I loved this movie as well. I think this movie and The Adams Family Movie are the two best tv big screen adaptations ever done. The directors and actors took the source material and instead of trying to copy it they updated it and added there own style and gave us great feature films. To like the tv show and say the movie was nothing like it is sort of like saying I love apples but apple pie is nothing like it, No it is a bigger more expensive awesome version of the apple.
Posted by Robert on May 5th, 2009Example the beverly Hillbillies tried so hard to copy the original that it just looked like a long poorly acted epeisode of the original. So I am glad get smart the movie was not just likt the original.
I could not agree any more with Robert (exept fo adams family).
It is really impossible to make a later series the same as the original – even tv series with the same actors have trouble.
I think it is one of the better tv to big screen adaptations. It did not fall into any of the normal mistakes that tv to movie adaptations make. it reinvented while still keeping the general idea of the series and did not repeat things from the tv series too much.
Posted by visuelle humour on May 9th, 2009I totally agree with Robert!
I loved the movie, have watched it many times already !
If the movie was going to be the same as the 1960’s series, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. I like it how they used some key things from the series, but added their own humour and techniques.
I’m definantly going to see number 2! Steve and Anna were awsome! great duo!
Posted by Ben on May 18th, 2009anybody rememeber a certain james bond film, In Her Majesty’s Service, it sucked, and yet they are still making bond films.
Posted by Philip Ian Staker on July 2nd, 2009Anne Hathaway rulez!
Posted by rick on July 19th, 2009On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was a terrific movie. Best of the Bonds, except for the fact that Lazenby was in the lead.
Posted by Mark H on August 30th, 2009i thought that the movie was so funny. when i got it on dvd, i watched the original one and then i watched the one that has all the deleted scences in it. that one was so funny. if you want a good laugh watched the deleted scences. i hope that the second one has the same characters/actors.
