Monday Morning Box Office Report: Beverly Hills Chihuahua is Top Dog

Ever since Babe, moviegoers have loved a good talking animal movie, and this week Beverly Hills Chihuahua fit the bill, taking in an astounding $29 million — the eighth biggest opening for the month of October ever. Eagle Eye took the #2 spot in its second week, followed by Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Ed Harris’ Appaloosa did quite well at #5, and Religulous made a surprise appearance in the top 10 despite playing in only 500 theatres. The majority of the other new releases kind of got lost in the shuffle, including Flash of Genius (#11), Blindness (#12), and How To Lose Friends and Alienate People which pretty much bombed, opening at #19 and earning just $1.4 million. That marks Simon Pegg’s second straight box office dud.

  1. I saw Religulous and it was pretty good. I was surprised it was playing at my standard (read: not indie) theater.

  2. Number one… what? … no way!

  3. I know Ian, its pretty sad!

  4. I’m surprised that “Religulous” didn’t make more money. And I’m even more surprised that “An American Carol” made more.

Was “Religulous” only on a limited number of screens or something? I thought it would be more of a draw.

  5. I’m actually not that surprised that Religulous didn’t make more. The topic of religion is very touchy, so it makes total sense that not a lot of people would want to see it. I mean, the majority of people living in the United States identify themselves as being of some faith, and from what I’ve heard, Religulous kind of takes them all on. So, is it really that surprising?

I’m just kind of sad that Stupid Dog Movie made that much money.
