Joel, an Arthur remake was considered (it may even still be), and the role of Arthur was offered to Ricky Gervais, who turned it down. In his words: “I said ‘no’ straight-away. Why would I mess with a perfect comedy? They know people don’t watch films that have the wrong font Ã¢â‚¬â€ it’s got an ’80s font.’”

Since my other comment got eaten by the spam filter, all the ‘remake haters’ should note that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is actually a remake of the Marlon Brando & David Niven starring film Bedtime Story.

It’s also worth noting that THE BROTHERS BLOOM is made in the same spirit of this film.

I would love to see the Evil Dead musical on the silver screen. I’ve wanted to see it on stage but never had the chance to do so.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a funny film, damn funny. One of Steve Martin’s best flicks and it got Emperor Palpatine in it as well.

Didn’t Greg say that…cause I think that’s why it has been rattling around in my subconscious. Caught some of it on Cinemax or something and considered how I’d remake it (not that I’d want to).

You’re right Joel they will soon enough be remaking forgettable films.

Also its crazy that Spielberg/Jackson can’t get funding (I thought they had carte blanche for life). It must be true that Spielberg wanted an obscene amount of backend or else I don’t know what else would deny him.

The Mortensen/Cronenberg thing makes me happy (I love A History of Violence). It would be cool if Cronenberg went sci-fi/horror again.

Also, why do they keep making musicals of stuff that the built in audience for probably don’t even like musicals (like Evil Dead)?

They really are scraping the bottom of the barrel for remakes aren’t they? With Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Short Circuit?

I mean, I like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but it’s not exactly a classic. I guess the storyline could be adapted to a new time/place/actors etc. but it just seems like someone somewhere is running out of ideas. Next we’re gonna hear about an Arthur remake and a Weekend at Bernie’s remake …
