Paul Greengrass in Talks to Direct Blackbeard?

Even after the tedious and bloated third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it seems Hollywood still hasn’t been able to get pirates off their mind. We heard a while back that Dreamworks was trying to set up a movie based on the true story of British buccaneer Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. David Franzioni (Gladiator, King Arthur) was hired to write the script, with the goal of keeping it more based in historical fact, and also aiming for an R-rating. Now this week we have word of a possible director for the project as well, and it’s one that’s got me somewhat excited.
According to Mania, the studio’s top choice to direct this true-life pirate pic is Paul Greengrass — the man who brought us Bloody Sunday, United 93, and The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum. Assuming he does sign on, the question I’m sure a lot of people will be asking is whether or not he will bring his frantic, handheld style to the movie, or if he will go for a slightly different technique. Personally, I don’t see why a little shaky cam wouldn’t be appropriate for capturing the chaos of warfare at sea. Let’s face it, Ridley Scott or Peter Weir might be obvious choices for something like this, but choosing Greengrass means they’re thinking outside the box a bit. What do you think, could Paul Greengrass bring a sense of realism to Blackbeard?

I’m sick of people masturbating to Pirates when its clear that Ninjas would kick their asses.
Posted by Ryan M. on September 23rd, 2008I think this would be great, if it was (I hate to say it) dark! It should be a rated R, blood soaked pirate adventure. Otherwise, I’ll have no interest.
It has to be Rated R…. or is that arrrrr.
Y’know… as in a pirate…
