The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Gets a New Installment

I’ll start with the bad news: there are still no plans for a continuation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie franchise. Last we heard, the studio had told director Garth Jennings that there would be no sequels because the first one didn’t make enough money. As far as I know, that situation has not changed.
What has changed, however, is the fact that the story will continue on paper, even after the death of creator Douglas Adams. Adams’ widow, Jane Belson, has officially given the go ahead for a new book in the series to be written by children’s author Eoin Colfer. It will be called And Another Thing…, and is expected to be out by next October.
Belson had this to say: “”I am delighted that Eoin Colfer has agreed to continue the Hitchhiker series… I love his books and could not think of a better person to transport Arthur, Zaphod and Marvin to pastures new. The project has my full support.”
I’m sure there are plenty of Douglas Adams fans who will look at this as a pure cash grab and refuse to recognize it as an official part of the story. However, this does happen quite often in the publishing world (just look at the Bourne series, for example), and it’s not always a bad thing. At the very least, it could lead to a renewed interest in the original books, and then maybe we’ll get that film sequel some of us have been hoping for… right?

Book was great. Movie was less than mediocre. I tried watching it again about a week ago and turned it off half way through.
The cast is stunning, but the carry-out of the movie itself is really boring.
Posted by Andrew James on September 17th, 2008I’m with Sean. I really liked the movie and thought they could have taken it into some great places over a couple more movies. Ah well.
Posted by Joel on September 17th, 2008Well the movie rightfully didn’t make enough money because other than the special and visual effects it was just really boring. I never read any of the sequel books but I’d definitely never read a new one by a different author.
Books are about the only entertainment avenue where there should be no successors. What kind of fuckhead would buy that Godfather Revenge book?
