Cash burning a hole in your pocket? Well there aren’t a ton of worthwhile high profile releases out this week (Speed Racer, The Love Guru and Made of Honor), but beyond that there are some interesting smaller releases including David Gordon Green’s Snow Angels, indie comedies Harold and Kabluey, and the sad yet heartwarming documentary Young@Heart. “Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal”
Sounds interesting, any chance of a review from Greg?
Posted by Henrik on September 16th, 2008The two biggest bombs of the summer arrive in one day.
I’m buying Speed Racer the second 10 o clock hits and the video store opens. Can’t fucking wait.
Posted by Goon on September 16th, 2008Goon, you have to admit; as much as people get wrapped up in hating on movies that are popular to hate on (Spider-Man 3, Lady in the Water) you certainly can get wrapped up in ‘loving on’ movies that are unpopular to ‘love on’. Not only will you head out to the store at 10am for a movie that no one will buy anyways, but you actually felt the need to post about it! I’m sensing a bit of fishing for naysayers here! (This isn’t a bad thing…I’d certainly rather see some Speed Racer debate on here over weather or not someone being deployed in the military is respectable)
P.S. I will be picking up Speed Racer as well. FUCK YOU HATERS.
Posted by Jay C. on September 16th, 2008Well, I had to do something while I waited out the clock for the video store to open! Indeed fishing for naysaysers. I even emailed Kurt and wished him a Happy Speed Racer Release Day.
Posted by Goon on September 16th, 2008I noticed that on the book of faces. Did you see Speed Racer yet Kurt? (Did he?)
Posted by Jay C. on September 16th, 2008No he hasn’t. I just knew he was very much looking forward to it and has a massive TV that will probably make at least a decent viewing experience.
Posted by Goon on September 16th, 2008btw, nostalgic for endless flame wars about Jaws yet?
Posted by Rowlfe on September 16th, 2008Does actually debating the merits of a film on a film website constitute flaming? I must have misunderstood the concept then.
I can’t wait to see Speed Racer myself, but it hasn’t even reached theatres here. Boo.
Posted by Henrik on September 16th, 2008Actually, I got confused and looked it up, and it has been in theatres here. WTF. I must have been sick or on vacation. I hate myself for not having Speed Racer in the theatre.
Posted by Henrik on September 16th, 2008I just want to stress again how awesome Speed Racer is. Everyone needs to see this movie.
Posted by Chris on September 16th, 2008I’m excited about pushing daisies, great show, does anyone else around these parts watch it? The only problem I have with the show is I feel extremely gay while watching it, still like it though.
Posted by Drew on September 17th, 2008P.S. I also thought Speed rocked
Posted by Drew on September 17th, 2008I watched the first half of Pushing Daisies Season 1 I think. It’s a good show but I just couldn’t keep up with all the other stuff I was watching at the time.
Posted by Sean on September 17th, 2008Drew, I love Pushing Daisies although I can see how you would feel effeminate watching it. (I would never watch the show with another guy in the room.)
I love the premise of the show as a metaphor for someone who loves a person, but because of circumstances can’t get “physically” involved. And the idea that whenever you get “close” to someone, that someone “leaves.”
I love the idea of the dog in the show, because it must instinctively know that it can’t touch its owner. I don’t know any dog that doesn’t need the touch and warmth of its owner.
Posted by Reed Farrington on September 17th, 2008I watched Young@Heart today.
I didn’t like it.
It’s not so much a problem with the characters or what they do, its the director and his narration, one of the most pitiful production jobs I’ve come across in recent years. It was patronizing, condescending, and unnecessarily exploitative, when there was enough real drama on its own without fuckface’s repeated, lingering, heavily ironic show poster shots. He deserves a punch in the face for that.
He narrates like a douche, like he’s reading to retarded people, redundantly explaining over and over again how many times they say ‘can’ or having to state the obvious that Stan still doesn’t know the words. I mean if he’d shut the fuck up we’d understand it by simply PAYING ATTENTION.
I give it a 2/4 in spite of Walker and some of the worst direction I’ve seen in a documentary in some time.
