Film Junk Recommends: Our First Batch of HMV Radio Spots

A couple of weeks ago on Film Junk Podcast #183 we had a special announcement about an upcoming collaboration between ourselves and HMV, the entertainment retail chain that Greg works for. It turns out they are launching a new satellite radio station that will play in stores across Canada, and in addition to previewing music from new releases, they wanted to have some quick reviews of movies that are on sale as well.

Thus, “Film Junk Recommends” was born. We will be providing them with some short 60-second spots that highlight a handful of DVDs that we like, and they will be added to the mix on the radio station (starting within the next week, I believe). If things go well, we will hopefully be providing new ones every month or so. So if you happen to live in Canada, don’t be surprised if you hear some familiar voices the next time you head into an HMV! Check out the first batch of spots below. (Note: Don’t expect in-depth discussions here folks… mostly just a quick plug and the occasional chuckle.)

  1. Sean, what kinds of guidelines were you guys given? I imagine you’re not allowed to say anything bad about a movie. So you guys just don’t review movies that you don’t like? Or do you lie? :-)

  2. Very nice. I look forward to hearing the updates when I next go into HMV. I can’t recall – will these be played nation wide or just locally?

Not sure which I liked best: The Condemned or the corn references on Roseanne.

  3. I hope a lot of middle aged women buy the Condemned after hearing this so they can see some man muscles.

Ditto on Reed’s comment; I’m also curious as to what guidelines you guys were given. Was there anything nixed by the HMV suits? Did you pick films off a list that the store is trying to promote? Anyways, sounds good, congrats.

  4. They gave us a big list of stuff that is currently on sale, and we just picked out some stuff we liked. This is why it is called “Film Junk Recommends”… we won’t be talking about anything we don’t particularly like.

  5. Marina: They are supposed to be nationwide, but it may be that each manager can decide individually if they want to play the satellite radio station or not.

  6. That’s awesome! They sound so professional but i love how you incorporated the signature film junk wit in there, you guys have gotta make some reed farrington recommends.

  7. Guys, based on Drew’s comment, I checked out the HMV spots and they are awesome! I should listen to the Film Junk podcast more often.

I could review all the stuff you guys hate. I can find the good in anything although it’s a good thing that I hate everything that you guys love… except for Chopper. (I’m referring to Sean’s dog, Chopper, not the 2000 Australian movie starring Eric Bana.)

  9. These are great! I’ll play them on my podcast for sure.

  10. Haha why do I have a feeling that HMV is going to want that erased from their Wikipedia page immediately?

Drew, if you’re in the business of adding stuff to Wikipedia, Film Junk still needs an entry of its own!

  12. Thanks Sean. I’ll let you know if I here it around these parts.

And the Wiki entry is pretty awesome! It needs a few graphics though…

  13. The wiki page is awesome.
