Wes Anderson to Remake French Comedy My Best Friend

As we anxiously await the release of Wes Anderson’s animated version of Roald Dahl’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox (which supposedly won’t hit theatres until November 2009), it seems that Anderson has jumped on board another new project that is an adaptation of someone else’s work. According to Variety, he has signed on to write an English language remake to My Best Friend (Mon Meilleur Ami), a French comedy directed by Patrice Leconte. He is also thinking about directing it as well.
The story is about a misanthropic antiques dealer who finds out that no one really likes him because of his selfishness. He makes a bet with a business partner that he does actually have a best friend, but in order to win the bet he has to convince a taxi driver to play the part. It has often been said that Anderson’s directorial style draws from the French new-wave, so I suppose this may not be too far out of his comfort zone. Either way I’m definitely interested to see him break out of the mold he has established for himself over the years, and this could be a great way to do it. Oh, and can we get Ricky Gervais to star in this too? Check out the trailer for the original below.

I know he’s influenced by the French New Wave, but has anyone actually told Wes Anderson that he’s not actually French? Look at that outfit. Whew!
Posted by Jon Rocks on September 10th, 2008I’m still way more excited about The Fantastic Mr. Fox. It will mark Anderson branching out (even more so than Tarantino did with Kill Bill) and giving us something that isn’t the same movie in a different outfit. (This thing however, sounds the same.)
I like his films a lot; but they all have the same stories (as well as cinematography and production design but that doesn’t even need to be said). Here’s a synopsis that works for every one of his movies:
A dysfunctional family unit of sorts must overcome their eccentricities in order to come closer together while the protagonist of that unit goes through a sequence of hair brained schemes to get what he wants from life but ultimately realizes he is only hurting the ones he loves.
Amirite?
