Duke Nukem Movie On The Way

You’d think that someone out there would learn from all the terrible video game to movie adaptations we’ve seen over the years, but the message still doesn’t seem to be getting through to people. If a game doesn’t have interesting characters or potential for a worthwhile story, then it’s not going to make for a decent movie. It’s as simple as that really, and as much as I think the upcoming Max Payne movie could be okay, and Prince of Persia might work on the big screen, I have little to no confidence that a Duke Nukem movie ever needs to be made. Nevertheless, it appears that Max Payne producer Scott Faye is working to make it happen.

In an interview with Kotaku, Faye revealed that he is trying to come up with an idea for the movie that could actually land some financing. The idea is that the release of the movie would likely be tied to the upcoming release of Duke Nukem Forever, the long-awaited sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. Unfortunately, that may not be a great idea, considering that this game has become something of a laughing stock in the game industry, with numerous announcements about it being in development and little to show for it.

“More than ever before, I feel that the feature adaptation of Duke Nukem will come to together nicely… We’re expanding Duke’s ’storyverse’ in a very significant major way without abandoning or negating any element that’s being used to introduce Duke to the next gen platforms.”

Storyverse? Right. At any rate, the only way I can see this game working is if it’s a comedy that lampoons the action genre. The similarities to Doom are particularly worrisome. Would you like to see a Duke Nukem movie? Do you think this will actually happen?

  1. if they made it with no cgi, or modern methods…and just used only filmmaking and effects methods that were available in say 1990 or below…it would come out like an awesome cult 80’s action sci fi movie…the CGI will just make it shitty and throw away…like mummy 3 or whatever…

  2. Duke Nukem, is already kind of based on They Live. With all of the similarities in terms of lines, storyline, and protagonist. I don’t feel as if fans are clamoring for a Duke Nukem movie. Duke Nukem Forever is going to be released before a Duke Nukem movie ever is.

  3. I have always wanted to see a duke nukem movie

  4. Duke Nukem is kinda based on Ash as well (from Evil Dead). I think this movie has potential to be awesome (if they don’t take it seriously) and treat it like it’s supposed to be an action flick from the 80’s. And yeah, Bob the Slob is right, too much CG would ruin it.

Why do they think this would be a great game to adapt versus all the other ones out there? I mean really, when did the last Duke Nukem game come out? When the N64 was still alive?

  5. Hopefully they find some new things for the Duke to nuke.

  6. Odds are the movie comes out before the game… Hey-oooh!

  7. I’ve been wanting to make a Duke film for years. I’m a huge fan, even purchased a legit copy from gametraders, and am currently working on a screenplay for it. If Mr Faye fails to make this film I will step in and make it the way it’s ment to be. One kick ass action film with bullets, bombs and those catchy one liners we all miss from the 80’s/90’s. It’s also not going to be PG, if it’s MA than so be it. “I’m gonna kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of gum…”
