Tom Cruise to Play a Serial Killer in The Monster of Florence?

Well it looks like there’s more Tom Cruise news going around this week, and once again it could possibly be interpreted as an attempt to reinvent himself and his image in the public eye. According to Variety, Cruise’s production company United Artists has picked up the rights to Douglas Preston’s book The Monster of Florence, which tells the true story of Preston’s investigation into Italy’s version of Jack the Ripper, a serial killer who ravaged the Italian countryside from 1968 to 1985. Tom Cruise will produce and possibly to star in the film.

Hearing the premise, Hannibal Lector instantly springs to mind, and apparently this story did serve as a bit of an inspiration for Thomas Harris. So does this mean Tom Cruise will be the new Anthony Hopkins? Well, the truth is, right now there is no indication that he would play the serial killer rather than one of the protagonists. However, I think that would definitely be an interesting choice, since one of the few other times he played a villain was Michael Mann’s Collateral, which he got a lot of praise for. On the other hand, perhaps this is going to be Tom Cruise’s Zodiac. Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects) is writing the script, no word yet on who might direct. I’m still crossing my fingers that we get to see Tom Cruise do some brutal killing. Thoughts?

  1. I agree with you Sean, it is about time that Cruise played a villain again. I really enjoyed his performance in Collateral.

  2. Anything but Cruise as an arrogant, successful prick and I’m there! Collateral, Magnolia & Born on the Fourth of July are the way to go.

  3. “I’m still crossing my fingers that we get to see Tom Cruise do some brutal killing.”

They could just turn on the cameras and film as Tom goes through his daily routine. Car accidents don’t just happen on their own, you know.

  4. I thought Tom Cruise was a serial killer in real life. Didn’t he rape and murder three prostitutes? My memory’s a lil’ hazy …

  5. This is the stuff he needs to do– rolse that are out of the box, or at least out of the box he’s put himself in. The Tropic Thunder role was a good move, and this would only further enhance his chances of getting his career back on track.

Am I alone in being a fan of his acting? I find him annoying in real life, but enjoyed him in several of his roles (Magnolia, M:I, Born of the 4th).
