Greg’s 2008 TIFF Report: Day 4

Finally, something decent on TV while I type. Scrubs! Sure it’s a DVD, but it’s still funny. One film today that I will get to in a bit.
“Come and see me. Can’t you see me. It’s so easy to believe in you.”
“Winona’s got herself a big brown beaver and she shows it off to all her friends.”
Today was an interesting day. Had some spare time this aft and decided to fit in a Blue Jays game. Solid pitching performance and a Rod Barajas RBI and we’re talking a thrilling 1-0 win. Some insights on the game. They advertised the shit out of Coke Zero. Guess what they don’t sell at the concessions? I like Coke Zero. It’s kind of my favourite soda, so I was annoyed and disappointed.
Continuing the weirdness… halfway through the game during a commercial break, they played a song by Brother Cane. Brother Cane? Other than the three people I went to see them with at the Viper Club 15 years ago, does anyone know who the hell they are? I don’t think so. The game was fun and exciting and there’s just something about a live ball game and a hot dog. Sure it’s lips and assholes and any other inedible pig part…but it’s delicious lips and assholes.
After the game it was time to hit the all you can eat sushi place. You may not know this, but I like to eat. The words all you can eat are wonderful. It actually should just be one word. Allyoucaneat. A good hour and a bit of solid eating, I had the sweats and I needed a short nap.
I head down to the theatre for the premiere of Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make A Porno. This wasn’t a flick that I had previously selected, but my brother had an extra ticket, so I decided to check it out.
I didn’t have high hopes for this, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it was filled with tons of swearing and dirty content, but it actually had kind of a sweet story to it. If you consider someone getting shit on and Traci Lords taking on a dude with a strap-on a sweet story. Overall it was pretty funny. A decent cast with Seth Rogan, Jason Mewes, Elizabeth Banks and many other faces that you would recognize including a small role from a former member of Breaker High! High school on cruise line rules!
The best part of the movie was seeing Kevin Smith on the stairwell to the washroom and saying hey. Check that… that was the second best part. The best part was the ridiculous question and answer period afterwards. First off it was being moderated by an older woman who had no sense of humour. This movie had every foul word in it about 25 times and they chose this lady to handle this group? Kevin was rattling off bad language like it was going out of style. Elizabeth Banks….so hot….answered a question with the phrase ‘fuck my c___’ I can’t type that word. Jason Mewes mimed some hardcore masturbation which seemed to bother her too which made it even funnier for me.
But the cake topper here, the most absurd thing was the final question from the crowd. One guy raised his hand and I shit you not, she said… “Ok you. The guy with the shirt.” The guy with the shirt? Were there guys with no shirts? I didn’t see any. The guy with the shirt???? You point into a crowd of hundreds and say “You! With the shirt!” Are you kidding me????? How does this woman have a job as a programmer for the Film Festival. Gah!!!!!
Amazing.
Tomorrow, I’m going to try and squeeze in a couple of extra movies. We’ll see how it goes.
I remain,
Greg

Posted by Greg on September 8th, 2008Nice call with the Primus lyrics, don’t know the first one though… Not a big Kevin Smith fan, still haven’t seen Clerks 2.
Posted by cronenfly on September 8th, 2008Does anyone else feel like Kevin Smith may be trying to steal some of Judd Apatow’s thunder? Casting Seth Rogan in a raunchy R rated comedy? Not that Smith’s previous films were classy affairs, but I mean… c’mon.
I’m probably going to end up seeing this, but I don’t think it looks very good.
And cronenfly– you didn’t miss much by not seeing Clerks 2.
The best thing Smith has done in the last 5 years is his Smodcast.
Posted by Jon Rocks on September 9th, 2008Coke Zero? Really? Why not the Diet Coke with Cherry, Lemon, or Lime?
Posted by paulm on September 9th, 2008Diet Coke has that awful aspartame aftertaste. Coke Zero doesn’t have that…and it tastes closer to regular Coke…just not as sugary.
