Gus Van Sant’s Milk Trailer Starring Sean Penn

The first trailer for Gus Van Sant’s Harvey Milk biopic has just arrived online, and it looks both stylish and uplifting. The film, entitled simply Milk, follows the trials and tribulations of the man who became the first openly gay politician to be elected into office anywhere, only to be assassinated shortly thereafter.

It’s obvious that the story holds some personal value for Van Sant, but from the trailer it looks like he’s done a good job of giving the film a realistic, documentary feel that is respectful without being too contrived. The talented cast includes Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco and Diego Luna, and I have a feeling that this is going to be another movie to watch come Oscar season. Milk hits theatres sometime in November; check out the trailer below and give us your thoughts.

  1. I think it looks awesome. Wasn’t interested before but now I am excited.

  2. this looks like it will definitely generate some oscar buzz, especially the performance from Penn and Brolin.

  3. That looks like the one that may get Penn an Oscar– not the abysmal “I Am Sam.”

    I’m excited for it.

  4. Gus Van Sant is gay then?

Seriously, Sean Penn in this looks and sounds exactly like in I am Sam. I’m sure the real Harvey Milk was like Sean Penn is in the trailer, but seeing such a stereotypical gay man on screen, just seems so politically incorrect. I guess the film is about how it is okay to be stereotypically gay and be fabolous, you don’t have to act like all the men who fuck women. I will never understand the gay issue.

  5. I didn’t think he looked stereotypically gay at all, infact i thought he was going against steryotype. When I think limp wristed and talking like a chick, and he didn’t do that, at least i didn’t think so.

  6. “Gus Van Sant is gay then?”

I thought that was pretty well known. Looks pretty good. I’m waiting for the trailer for the road.
