J.T. Petty’s The Burrowers Trailer

One of the Midnight Madness screenings I’m hoping to catch at the Toronto Film Fest is J.T. Petty’s horror-western hybrid The Burrowers. I have yet to see any of Petty’s previous work, but I know S&man played at TIFF a few years back and it sounded like an interesting exploration of why people are drawn to the horror genre. Petty was also attached to direct a remake of Faces of Death at one point, but that project seems to have silently disappeared.
At any rate, The Burrowers is probably his first movie that will get out to a wider audience since it has already been picked up by Lionsgate. It takes place in the late 1800’s, where a couple of ranchers discover a girl buried in the dirt and eventually find themselves being stalked by some sort of underground creature. I am reminded a bit of Tremors, except that what this movie lacks in comedic elements, it will make up for with slow building suspense and terror. Just from watching the trailer, it seems like the horror and western genres fit so well together, I’m surprised more people haven’t done it before. Check out the clip below and see what you think.

This looks pretty interesting! The sci-fi-genre has so had many variations that a straight-up sci-fi would be a breath of fresh air at this point, but the Western & Historical genres have plenty of experimenting left to do. That’s one of the things I really like about The Village, too bad Shyama felt it necessary to add a twist.
Posted by Bas on September 2nd, 2008this could be good, it does have the Tremors similarities, but mixing horror and westerns could be interesting.
Posted by Chopper on September 2nd, 2008I’m down with this movie based on the trailer. A question though: Why does every monster in every movie have to make the same clicking and screeching noises?
