Monday Morning Box Office Report: Sept. 1, 2008

Not a great weekend at the box office in general, as most moviegoers found better things to do than head to the theatre. With no highly anticipated releases this weekend, Tropic Thunder took the #1 spot for the third week in a row, while Vin Diesel’s Babylon A.D. was #2 (better than I thought it would do) and The Dark Knight hung in at #3. The House Bunny and Traitor were #4 and #5 respectively. Disaster Movie surprisingly opened all the way down at #7 (could it be the beginning of the end for these flicks?), but it was nowhere near as bad as College and Hamlet 2, which were buried down at #15 and #17. That’s not good for business.

1. Tropic Thunder — $11.5M
2. Babylon A.D. — $9.7M
3. The Dark Knight — $8.75M
4. The House Bunny — $8.3M
5. Traitor — $7.9M
6. Death Race — $6.23M
7. Disaster Movie — $6.17M
8. Mamma Mia! — $4.42M
9. Pineapple Express — $3.5M
10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona — $3M

  1. Who is still going to see The Dark Knight?

  2. Shit, I’d see it again if there were an IMAX near my cultural wasteland.

  3. Jeez, I better see Hamlet 2 before it gets kicked out of Tucson theaters for stinking up the joint. Now if only we knew what Film Junk watched this weekend … where’s the p’cast???
