Monday Morning Box Office Report: Aug. 18, 2008

After four weeks at the top of the charts, The Dark Knight has finally been surpassed by Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder, which took in a healthy $26 million in its opening weekend. Not surprisingly, The Dark Knight remained in the #2 position, while Star Wars: The Clone Wars became the first Star Wars flick to open all the way down at #3. $15 million isn’t a great opening for a family-friendly CG flick… clearly audiences didn’t know what to make of this movie. Alexandre Aja’s Mirrors debuted at #4 with $11 million, while Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona actually made the top 10 with a $3.7 million opening, his best opening since Small Time Crooks back in 2000.
1. Tropic Thunder — $26M
2. The Dark Knight — $16.8M
3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars — $15.5M
4. Mirrors — $11.1M
5. Pineapple Express — $10M
6. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor — $8.61M
7. Mamma Mia! — $6.5M
8. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 — $5.93M
9. Step Brothers — $5M
10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona — $3.71M

I think people voted with their wallets on Star Wars.
Posted by joe on August 18th, 2008Can’t wait for the podcast. I’d love to hear what you guys thought of Tropic Thunder. I loved it. Best comedy of the summer, easily. On an unrelated note, Canada earned 9 medals at the time of this posting. Not too shabby.
Posted by Matt on August 18th, 200872 medals for the U.S. at the time of this posting. Feels like half these medals are from swimming though. The amount of HD coverage of the games is pretty awesome. Any posters/filmjunk crew watching enjoying the Olympics this year? Other than Greg, no one else seems to give a shit about sports.
Posted by Primal on August 18th, 2008I don’t care much about sports and the Olympics. I think they should just give all the athletes guns and let ‘em at it. (Kidding!)
I don’t even care for sports movies. I’d rather watch a musical than a sports movie.
Regarding Tropic Thunder, I think it would be remiss of me for the sake of the Treknobabblers not to mention that Ben Stiller is a huge Trekkie. I hear that a character in Tropic Thunder watches the Kirk / Gorn fight on his video iPod for fighting tips.
Also according to Neil’s comments on a post at trekmovie.com:
Posted by Reed Farrington on August 18th, 2008- Matthew McConaughey’s character has a set of pointed ears on his desk.
- Robert Downey Jr. plays a character named “Kirk Lazarusâ€.
