Rian Johnson Goes Sci-Fi with Looper

With The Brothers Bloom only a couple of months off, director Rian Johnson has already started to think about what he might want to do for his third feature film. And from the sounds of it, it’s going to be quite a bit different from both The Brothers Bloom and Brick. According to a recent interview with IGN, he’s got his eye on the sci-fi genre this time around, and something that’s “really violent and dark”:
“It’s called Looper… It’s sci-fi, but it’s very much — well, I think people toss out Philip Dick sci-fi when they mean ’small, dark’ sci-fi. Although, when I think of Philip Dick’s books, it’s something very different… To me, it’s a lot more like the first Terminator. It’s very sci-fi, but it’s very character-based and very concentrated. It’s very different from the Terminator movies, but it’s like the first Terminator in that time travel is involved with it, but only as a plot device.”
Clever guy, name dropping Philip K. Dick and Terminator and all of that in there. I’m definitely intrigued. I don’t know about the name though… is Looper intended to form a loose trilogy with Primer and Jumper? Actually, Primer is kind of what I’m picturing coming from the guy who did Brick, but who knows. If he’s envisioning something with a bigger budget, it could be very different indeed. The Brothers Bloom hits theatres on October 24th; in the meantime enjoy this short film that Johnson made in college called Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!
