Battlestar Galactica Getting Movie Prequel Directed by Adama Himself

Just when you thought that the current incarnation of Battlestar Galactica was actually going to end early next year, well, think again. Apparently the Caprica spin-off series is not enough, and both Sci-Fi and Universal Cable Productions will be teaming up for another BSG feature length movie, coming sometime after the conclusion of Season 4. This one is going to be a prequel, not going as far back as Caprica, instead taking place just after the Cylons have destroyed most of the human settlements. The only cast members confirmed so far are Michael Trucco (Anders), Aaron Douglas (Tyrol), and Dean Stockwell (Cavil), with more expected to sign on soon, but the big news is that Edward James Olmos will be directing it!

Now before you go thinking that we’ve got another Jonathan Frakes on our hands, Olmos has directed stuff prior to BSG, including a movie called American Me and a made for TV feature called Walkout, for which he received a DGA Award nomination. Jane Espenson (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) will be penning the script. Mark Stern of Sci Fi confirmed that the success of Razor was a big factor for the new movie, and that the budget is much higher than that of a typical TV pilot. I am guessing this news will make a lot of people happy, and since it’s a prequel I’ll definitely check it out. What I am wondering is, will Battlestar Galactica ever be big enough to justify a full-blown theatrical feature? It certainly feels like it has a big enough following right now, but after the Firefly/Serenity debacle, I don’t think anyone wants to take such a big risk again.

  1. American Me is powerful stuff. An unflinching eye on prison culture and male rape. Good times.

  2. I can’t wait for a BSG that takes place before they F’d it all up.

  3. Olmos has directed several great BSG episodes. I have no worries about him at the helm.
