New To Theatres This Weekend: Aug. 1, 2008

Two new major releases hit theatres this weekend, one of which is the behemoth that is The Mummy 3. I’ve never really understood why this series is so successful, but there’s obviously a lot of money behind this one and they’re expecting a lot from it. Going up against it is a new Kevin Costner movie called Swing Vote, a political comedy of sorts. In limited release we have Clive Barker’s Midnight Meat Train, which is opening in about 100 theatres, and Sixty-Six, a period dramedy about a boy’s barmitzvah and the 1966 World Cup finals. What are you seeing? Can The Dark Knight come out on top three weeks in a row?

  1. I can’t wait for your review of the third Mummy movie. They are always very entertaining. Other critics have not been very kind to it. But then again, you guys liked Indy 4 so who knows what you’re gonna think of this one. And Yes, TDK can totally be #1 three weeks in a row.

  2. I’d rather see The Dark Knight again. The Mummy movies are a relic of the generic summer CG blockbuster before superhero movies hit it big.

  3. Midnight Meat Train I enjoyed as the short story….this doesn’t seem to be as “terrifying” as reading it.

The Mummy 3….even though its another over the top CGI fest, I wouldn’t mind seeing it. I’m a sucker for big battle scenes maybe. :D
