Angelina Jolie to Play Catwoman?
Now that most people have seen The Dark Knight, they’re ready to move on and start debating where the series should go next. I guess you can’t blame people for wanting more, but the speed with which some of these early casting rumours have started popping up is pretty ridiculous. I’m sure Christopher Nolan himself hasn’t even decided where he wants to take things, but a lot of people seem to think that there are hints in the movie that either Two-Face or Catwoman could be involved. Adding fuel to the Catwoman rumour is a report that says Angelina Jolie has been circling the role (regardless of whether or not such a role actually exists).
According to the New York Daily News, Julie Newmar (the original Catwoman from the 60’s TV series) has heard that Jolie is very interested in playing Catwoman, and Newmar thinks that she would “own the part”. Said Newmar: “My industry friends tell me [she] has made inquiries about the role… I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman’s one true love.”
Now obviously we have to take all of this with a grain of salt. There has also been talk of Johnny Depp playing The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Penguin, but it all strikes me as nothing more than fanboy fantasizing at this point in time. However, it’s interesting to note that nowadays movie studios are actually trying to listen to the fans wherever possible (the replacement of Katie Holmes, for example, is believed by some to be a response to fan complaints). For the record, while I think Jolie would probably be well-suited for the role, somehow I think she would be just a little too… obvious. It all comes back to a debate over casting A-list actors in comic book movies, and a lot of times I don’t think that’s the right call. More importantly, I don’t see why they would bring Catwoman into the mix when people still have bad memories of the Halle Berry film in the heads. What do you think of Angelina Jolie as Catwoman? What villains do you want to see in the next Batman movie?

I don’t think I’d like to see Catwoman in the next Batman film. Just like most of the villains in the Batman comics I don’t she would fit into the style of movies that Christopher Nolan has been making, i.e. more realistic. I think the only villain left that would really suit is The Riddler.

Posted by theman on August 1st, 2008I read somewhere (maybe here?) someone suggesting Nolan go for a real challenge in terms or reinventing some of the less obvious choices… They mentioned it’d be interesting to see what he could do with a “real” Mr. Freeze, and I’d add to this list Harley Quinn (though she might be a bit weird to see after Ledger’s Joker); Poison Ivy or maybe some of the more obscure ones (like he did in …Begins)like Hush or Anarky…
On the other hand I’d love to see a Se7en-ish Riddler…

Posted by Yih on August 2nd, 2008Nobody and I mean nobody thought that Ledger would be good as the Joker when he was first announced so I think that if and when they make the third one they will announce actors that nobody expected.
Nolan proved that he saw amazing talent in Ledger, that few others did and who hadn’t been able to show his chops properly in past projects.
Jolie is way too obvious as the Catwoman and I don’t think the character, a cat burglar, would lend itself to an interesting storyline. The Riddler is the only one that could be done “realistically” in the universe that Nolan and co created for this franchise.

My vote for Batman Begins 3/Dark Knight 2 is the Riddler played by Michael Emerson (aka Ben from LOST).
Since Gotham is set up to hate Batman at the end of Dark Knight (spoiler?), I say that the Riddler should start out as an average guy who rises up out of the generally angry populace of Gotham to try to take down Batman, but when he begins to go too far, Batman becomes a good guy in the city’s eyes again as he fights back against Riddler. My vision of his character in a sequel to Dark Knight is that of a concerned citizen who makes a stand but goes too far and must be stopped.

Posted by Emperor Fabulous on August 3rd, 2008I think Riddler is an “intellectual” Joker. So in answer to post #13 by Phil, I think the Riddler is a different level of menace who can kill without the excuse of insanity on his side.
I think Nolan should give Jim Carrey another chance at The Riddler.
Actually, I think the next villain should be… Robin. That would mess up the franchise good.
I betcha if Jolie really wanted to play Catwoman that WB would consider restarting the Catwoman franchise on its own.

In other words I want Bane to be in the third, and to have him break batmans back like in the comics, and then the cops take Bane down and batman can retire like he wanted to in dark knight. It’d be perfect too because doesn’t Bane want to avenge the death of the raja ghul guy? They could also throw in the riddler to fill up space and make him a crazy mass murderer leaving clues for batman. Something dark like zodiac or seven.

As for Catwoman Angelina Jolie seems like a good fit and they should include her because she’s a main villain. They should bring Two-Face back also. I think someone who can be as good as Jim Carrey was or even Carrey himself could play Riddler. They should more dark and crazy. For example killing people who answer his riddles wrong. What about the Mad Hatter? or Man Bat? Anyone have any opinions about them?
Posted by Critic09 on August 7th, 2008That is one of the hottest pictures I’ve ever seen. Oh My God. IMO she can play whoever she wants to. But then again, I don’t see how “main villain Catwoman” would really fit in a non-Burtonesque Batman universe. She could however be a minor character/Batman’s love interest that exposes more of Batman’s character, as he takes on The Riddler or Bane.

By the way, am I the only person who thought that Harvey Dent died at the end of the movie? Everyone keeps telling me that he survived. He fell a bunch of stories and then they held that mourning ceremony for him.

My friend Steve made a similar comment to mine only it was about Penguin when I said “I hope he’s not in it because he’s retarded” when we were discussing who would be the next villain on the way home.The only reason I want to see him is because how scary he’ll look.
