Seth Rogen and Friends to Star in Ghostbusters 3?

Alright folks, it’s time for your wild and unfounded rumour of the week. Let me start by saying that I don’t believe this for a second, although I do think it makes for an interesting “What If?” scenario. Someone over at Dread Central has it from a “very reliable source” that a third Ghostbusters movie is indeed in development, and that all of the original cast members have finally agreed to return. The catch is that the movie will supposedly be a “passing of the torch”, with Seth Rogen and “the crew from 40 Year Old Virgin” eventually suiting up and taking over for Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and Hudson. Huh?
In the post, they do bring up an interesting point about the comedy of Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and all of their associates being comparable to Murray, Ramis, Ivan Reitman and John Candy back in the 80’s, and anyone who watched Freaks & Geeks knows that Apatow idolized Murray and Reitman. That said, I seriously doubt that this would ever happen. Bill Murray has been steadfast in his refusal to sign on for a sequel, and I don’t see what is so compelling about this idea that he would agree to sign on just so he could hand over the series to a bunch of young upstarts. It might sell the franchise to a new generation, but wouldn’t it alienate a lot of old fans? On the other hand, I’d love to see what Seth Rogen and others might do to re-invent it. The problem is, they’ve already got way too much on their plate over the next few years. Seth Rogen is busy trying to re-invent The Green Hornet right now, so taking on a big project like this at the same time just doesn’t make sense. There were rumours not too long ago about Ben Stiller taking over the Ghostbusters series too, but they also turned out to be bogus. That said, does this seem like a good idea or a bad idea?

If the team messed up the Ghostbusters sequel when they were supposed to be in their prime then I don’t think they could pull of a new one, with or without the Jew Tang Clan.

Posted by Bob the Slob on July 31st, 2008Im up for this.
Posted by Captain N on July 31st, 2008I think the comparison of Seth to Dan is a pretty good one. They both are not very funny, but suit specific parts. Think of the Blue Brothers – parts like that were good for Dan, but in other movies, he just doesn’t seem so funny.
Posted by David on July 31st, 2008Well, I’m sure this will never happen, but even so, I hate this idea. No more Ghostbusters, please. I love the original and don’t mind the sequel. What else needs to be said?
Posted by Rian on July 31st, 2008As a RABID Ghostbusters fan, I welcome Seth & Co. to be handed the GB torch/particle thrower. I can’t think of anyone else better!
And as for: “I hate this idea. No more Ghostbusters, please. I love the original and don’t mind the sequel. What else needs to be said?”
Um…how about, successfully reviving the franchise 25 years after it’s original release would be frickin’ AWESOME?! If there’s one IP that needs to cool it’s jets, it’s Star Wars. 30 continuous years of Star Wars is enough! Let some other nostalgic property have the lime light for a change, Mr. Lucas.
Posted by Jason on July 31st, 2008I dunno how true this could be, we’ve been told by Akryod that we should think of the upcoming game as Ghostbusters 3.
Posted by Paul on July 31st, 2008I’d be down for seein a new ghostbusters flick with Seth. His sense of humor is just as dry as Bill Murray’s. Pass the frickin torch, yo! There’s always room for JELLO.

Look, a Ghostbusters sequel, if done correctly, could be amazing. But it would need to be a masterpiece to not piss people off. Like, a three hour epic piece of genius, laden with real emotion, dry and intelligent humour and genuine scares (and not a single marijuana or dick joke Mr Rogen). I get that these guys are fans, and they should be as Ghostbusters is f’ing amazing. But they are not up to pulling off this kind of material. If they really care about this franchise and its fans they’ll leave it alone, regardless of how much their egos tell them they should get involved just because the opportunity is there.
Give it to a real visionary filmmaker (like Chris Nolan with Batman – despite The Dark Knight’s script flaws) and you’ve got something special. Maybe the Cohen brothers or Wes Anderson. Give it to a comedy troupe who happen to be flavor of the month and I slit my wrists in protest. I couldn’t stand someone defacing Ghostbusters. It means too much.

DO you forget one of the greatest lines from Ghostbusters
Dr Ray Stantz: Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here.
Posted by Marshall on July 31st, 2008Walter Peck: They caused an explosion!
Mayor: Is this true?
Dr. Peter Venkman: Yes it’s true.
[pause]
Dr. Peter Venkman: This man has no dick.
I think people are putting too much stock into how “amazing” the first two Ghostbusters movies are. The films are fun, imaginative comedies propelled by the chemistry of the cast. They are far from masterpieces of cinema whose hallowed graves we shouldn’t desecrate. I would definitely welcome seeing Seth Rogen and (some) of the Apatow cast join the original cast in a Ghostbusters sequel. It would be fun.
Posted by Joel on July 31st, 2008There have been a lot of rumors this week but this is the dumbest by far. NO way would Apatow and his gang hijack someone elses property.I don’t understand why people run with these stories. Yes the cast would be a lot of fun but this will NEVER happen!
Posted by entertainmenttodayandbeyond on July 31st, 2008I think Jay’s idea about making GB 3 a Wes Anderson movie would be perfect. That’s what I’d really like to see the old cast back (sure they could have some new ones and Rogen in an Anderson joint might work) with the zaniness and zazz of any WA flick.
Posted by Ian on July 31st, 2008this could be interesting, but then again, why is hollywood trying to bring back all the classics and remaking them or pumping out a sequel 10 plus years later. are they running out of ideas or what.
Posted by Chopper on August 2nd, 2008Im just worried if that they will turn ghostbusters into another pot head comedy if the main actors are casted way to young.Has any herd any news on the game it looks like that its in limbo right now?
Posted by paulie on August 3rd, 2008I honestly can’t believe it. I started penning a very amateur script for this a few months back. I picked Rogen and crew to take up the roles and work with the original cast. Heaps of people thought I was crazy, but started to like the idea. I just can’t believe I wasn’t alone in thinking this. It would be awesome if done right.
