I Am Legend Prequel in Development?

Way back before I Am Legend even hit theatres, the movie’s screenwriter Mark Protosevich was already dropping hints about a possible sequel. One year and $580 million later, I’d say there’s a very good chance this movie will be getting a sequel, the only dilemma is how to continue from where the first movie ended off. At the San Diego Comic Con last week, director Francis Lawrence confirmed that there have been discussions about it, and that it would use the ol’ prequel trick to get around any barriers to the story.
“Yes, yes, absolutely, we’re actually trying to crack that. We’re trying to figure out some ideas for it, but yes, it would be a prequel.”
I know a lot of people had problems with the end of I Am Legend, and I agree that it took a weird turn, but I still liked the movie a lot. Could a prequel still be interesting? I think so, although it will be a totally different movie. There probably wouldn’t be any zombies/vampires to deal with, and it would be more of an apocalypse movie, showing the outbreak of the virus. What do you think, is an I Am Legend prequel something you’d like to see?

A prequel would be very cool, but I don’t fully understand why a sequel is totally out of the picture. I mean, all of the mutants didn’t get “cured” and there is a compound that needs protecting. I think it would be interesting how to try to fight and cure the same enemu at the same time.
Posted by Matt on July 29th, 2008Did anyone read the book? I hate to be “that guy” but the movie was in no way shape or form remotely accurate to the book. After reading “I Am Legend” then seeing it in theaters I was highly disappointed and felt they completely missed the point. If they were to do a prequel, I don’t think I’d so see it.

The reason why a sequel is totally out of the picture is because it could not involve Will Smith, other than through flashbacks. I agree that it could still be an interesting movie, but it just wouldn’t make $580 million.
Posted by Sean on July 29th, 2008This film was crap IMO. Totally missed the point of the book and its title and what the hell were they thinking with those creatures.
I’ll skip it.
Posted by Swarez on July 29th, 2008I would see another I Am Legend film, but I know a LOT of people who wouldn’t. I was wrapped up in the sci-fi story enough to let the film’s faults slip by for the most part, but all of my non-sci-fi-fan friends couldn’t get past the CG zombie/vampires (aka zompires) or the Shrek scene. I’m not sure how many potential repeat viewers this film or this franchise has.
Posted by Rian on July 29th, 2008As long as Will Smith is in it, I will be there Thursday at midnight.
I am a Fresh Prince whore
Posted by Yih on July 29th, 2008I’ve yet to read any Richard Matheson so the main thing that bothered me were the needlessly CG dark seekers. I’m not objecting.
“I am a Fresh Prince whore” You’re obviously not the only one.
Posted by Ryan M. on July 29th, 2008Im in favor of Warner Bros simply pulling a Beneath the Planet of the Apes and cast another A-list actor or actress and develop a SEQUEL that takes place in Los Angeles. The concept will sell! NO PREQUEL FOR ME!
