Leonardo DiCaprio Pursuing a New Twilight Zone Movie?

Will we be seeing another Twilight Zone movie in the near future? It sounds like it is a distinct possibility, as Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way recently put out the word that they are looking for script submissions and pitches on a new feature film based on the classic Rod Serling sci-fi series. DiCaprio is not likely to be directly involved, although The Twilight Zone is supposedly his favourite TV show.
Strangely, we’ve been hearing a lot of references to The Twilight Zone as of late with regards to recent and upcoming films, such as M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening (which was compared unfavourably to a Twilight Zone episode) and Richard Kelly’s upcoming movie The Box (which is drawn from a Richard Matheson short story that also served as the basis for a Twilight Zone episode). The original Twilight Zone: The Movie wasn’t all that well received back in 1983, but it certainly didn’t help that the film’s production was marred by a helicopter accident that killed actor Vic Morrow and two child actors. It sounds like they don’t want to make this new one a multi-segment film, but rather one linear narrative. Either way I’d love to see it… there simply isn’t enough true science-fiction in theatres nowadays. Most of the movies classified as “sci-fi” are just action franchises with robots in them… don’t you agree?

Yes! absolutely agree, and others are classified as science fiction just cause they take place in the future, like Chldren of Men…
Posted by ivan on July 28th, 2008I also see what you mean about a lack of “true” science fiction.
I haven’t seen any movement on Appian Way’s AKIRA adaptation in some time (imdb has it set for a 2009 release which would be impossible). I’ve been dreading that remake incessantly. As for a Twilight Zone remake? I don’t think its a bad idea.
Posted by Ryan M. on July 28th, 2008All the people involved in the original Twilight Zone thought the format worked best telling stories in a half an hour. They went to hour long versions in the 4th season, and then changed back to a half an hour in the 5th and final season. People thought the hour long versions had too much “padding.”
They should make a new Twilight Zone movie that is a half an hour long. That would be a twist! Imagine the credits rolling after a half an hour and then the theater lights turning on with a stunned audience in their seats. Haha.
Posted by Reed Farrington on July 28th, 2008I feel like such a tool when it comes to Leonardo DiCaprio. I hear his name these days and I’m immediately interested. Of course, when his next films are being helmed by Tarantino and Scorcese or involve classic shows like The Twilight Zone, I guess I have plenty of reasons to get excited.
Posted by Rian on July 29th, 2008@Reed, I’d go to a film like that if I didn’t have to pay 11 bucks like I do now… although that’d be a dead giveaway if thickets were 1/3rd price. heh
