Comic Con Rumour Control: Aronosky on Robocop, Ratner on God of War, Proyas off Silver Surfer

Every now and then, crazy internet rumours do come true. This week a couple of the bigger rumours were confirmed at the San Diego Comic Con and one was debunked; we get the scoops courtesy of /Film.

First of all, Darren Aronofsky is indeed going to direct MGM’s Robocop remake, so you can put that in your pipe and smoke it! It will actually be a sequel that takes place 20 years after the events of the first movie. David Self (Road to Perdition) will write the script. I think this is great news all around, and will definitely change a lot of people’s minds about the project.

Secondly, Brett Ratner has been confirmed for a God of War adaptation. And hey, who broke the news first? Advertising Age. But who broke the news second? That’s right, Film Junk, people! Honestly I don’t hate Brett Ratner as much as some other people do, and I’m just kind of curious to see such a bad ass game on the big screen. It probably won’t be very good but what can you do.

Now, lastly we have a rumour that was quashed at Comic Con, and I’m definitely a little bit heart broken. It turns out that Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) will not be directing a Silver Surfer standalone movie. “Unfortunately that is just a rumor. I don’t know where that came from… I do like Silver Surfer, but I’m not going to be doing it.” Well, you can’t win ‘em all.

  1. I have never seen a Darren Aronofsky film, but getting David Self on board is amazing news. I loved Thirteen Days and loved Road to Perdition even more. And I love RoboCop. I don’t think these guys will make a bad movie, and if they make a good RoboCop sequel, everybody wins.

I mean a sequel is completely allowed. It’s the remakes that seem stupid. I wonder if it will be called RoboCop 4, or maybe they’ll go with the new Stallone trend and call it Alex Murphy.

  2. The sequel thing is much more acceptable. I’m glad I don’t have to see the origin story all over again (which is so pointless [seven words: guy gets injured and turned into cyborg]). It has a lot of places it could go…it could be great with a guy like Aronofsky on board. It’ll be cool to see Robocop dealt with now that we know the future will have internet.

  3. Brett Ratner is not as horrible as everyone makes him out to be. Sure, he hasn’t made a movie that hasn’t sucked in over six years, and sure, he has ruined both the Rush Hour and and X-Men franchises… Where was i going with this again? oh yeah. He has shown a lot of skill behind the camera with Red Dragon. (I liked it) At least that’s something to go off on.

  4. I must say i am very relieved to hear that this is a sequel with Aronofsky on board. I love everything the man has done yet! As for David Self,I have only seen Road to Perdition, but i liked what i saw. I think the writing should be great. Will they retain the black as oil humor, the (as relevant now as it was then)corporate satire, and the relentless violence? I certainly hope so…

  5. I’m shocked he’s doing this. This will be interesting if he can get if off the ground. I guess after the fountain he’s looking for hits. Kind of like Spike Lee…
