George Lucas Planning to Re-release Star Wars Movies in 3D

I don’t think there’s anyone out there who didn’t see this coming. With 3D slowly proving itself to be the next big technological step for the movie industry, there are a lot of filmmakers looking into the possibility of enhancing older movies using this new format. Of course, at the forefront of that movement is Mr. George Lucas, who it seems is constantly looking for new ways to retell the same damn story over and over again.
According to the folks at Coming Soon, DreamWorks Animations CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg recently confirmed that Lucas was actively pursuing the possibility of re-releasing all six Star Wars movies in 3D. While I don’t doubt that he could pull it off, the question is, are people sick of constantly getting new versions of Star Wars movies every couple of years? Alright, I know… stupid question. As much as I’m curious to see what this technology can do with older films, I can’t help but roll my eyes when Lucas keeps going back to the well. Why not make a brand new 3D movie like James Cameron? On the other hand, I suppose Star Wars is probably one of the most fitting franchises to apply a 3D makeover to. What do you think, does this sound cool or is the new 3D thing just another passing fad?

As usual, I’m rolling my eyes at Mr. Lucas, but also forking over the $ at the same time.

Posted by Baychuk on July 23rd, 2008Man, he’s really got nothing left in the tank. I suppose I would see this, out of some sort of compulsion to see star wars on the bog screen, but I really wish he would do something different. He keeps saying he wants to go art-house, and that there is some Tuskegee experiment movie he is making… I’ll believe it when we see it.

Posted by Jon Rocks on July 23rd, 2008George Lucas Five Year Plan 2007:
1. Destroy Indy 4
2. Destroy Indy more by making Mutt Williams movie
3. Hold off destroying Indy, begin cycle of destroying Star Wars again
4. destroy everything, 3D versions only, burn all masterprints
5. Indy/star wars crossover…Fuck…why not.

I think it’ll be subject of his next movie.
Posted by Baychuk on July 23rd, 2008At this point, Lucas kind of looks like a butch lesbian.
Posted by Jon Rocks on July 23rd, 2008You know I don’t mind 3d if they don’t feel compelled to do all that forced in your face shit. That shit makes movies look campy. Give me a 3d sci fi that the focus is putting me further in the environment, that’s all. Make me feel I’m riding along on top of a spaceship as it hits hyper drive, make me feel I in the circle of heroes as they discuss their next move, make me feel I just got covered in blood and guts!
Posted by rus in chicago on July 23rd, 2008I’d watch them.
Posted by Paul on July 23rd, 2008This is gonna be as much of an upgrade as the ridiculous CGI animated alien dancer/singer was in the last time he cosmetically tried to update the Star Wars films in the 90s. That looked fucking stupid. And it’s gonna be even dumber this time around. Have fun wasting your money on garbage.
Posted by Matt on July 23rd, 2008Bob the Slob hit it right on the head. After making Indy unpallatable for me with Indy 4, it’s Star Wars’ turn. Well done George, you washed up billionare, you.
that will be is legacy he will beand remebered as the perfect example of a one trick pony.
Posted by wickedgerbil on July 23rd, 2008It may not be a passing fad - haven’t decided on that one yet - but this money grab is getting totally out of hand. How much money can one guy really need?
Posted by Marina on July 23rd, 2008All depends on the look he goes for. If it looks like that shitty animation style that they used for clone wars I wont be into it at all. Make it more like beowulf, gritty real and get good voice acting.
Posted by bret on July 24th, 2008I still think 3d is dumb, and so is “remaking” star wars.
Posted by joe on July 24th, 2008Has anyone seen the new 3D tech? Is it actually “good”?
The last 3D tech I saw was many years ago, and still fairly flickery. The left/right polarized stuff can be okay I guess. What tech are they using these days? Is it actually something “new”?
Posted by Doug on July 24th, 2008The last 3D thing i saw was Spy Kids. I’m pretty much a sap for anything Star Wars that comes out in theaters but I honestly think making Star Wars in 3D would be a total waste of time and money. I mean who needs lightsabers coming out of screen at you or Darth Vader breathing in your face?
Posted by Star Wars Geek on July 27th, 20083D Star Wars… Well damn. It is just another way for George to get our money, and he knows we’ll pay to see it. Ofcourse I’ll see it in bad ass 3D. If nothing else, Star Wars is the best film to fit into 3D. I just hope they are released in order; Ep I Phantom, then Ep II and last Ep IV Return of the Jedi. As for his neck… WoW! What the hell happend?! He get stung by a bee??? Is he part bullfrog?
