I was just going on about how much I enjoy watching At the Movies, and literally, minutes after praising the show, Ropert said how he was moving on. Ironic and tragic. Yes, the nostalgia of Siskel and Ebert’s sometimes cruel and sometimes hilarious banter still brings a smile to my face, but I found Ropert to be an able and entertaining critic. I found the pairing of Ropert and that bearded guy with the glasses to be a very entertaining pair, with Ropert often times taking a Siskel-like role, disagreeing strongly with his contemporary. Well, I’ll miss this show on Sunday nights, and I’m sure Disney and ABC will put some celebrity gossip show or some other trash in its place. Too bad.

I stopped watching the show when Roeper join the ranks. He’s just not fun to listen to. At least Siskel and Ebert were entertaining. At this point, I don’t even know what they’re on or on what channel. I just don’t care.

The announcement now is that Ben Lyons and some other Ben dude will take over with a re-envisioned format (READ: even more dumbed down). Lyons Jr. looks like he’s 19. Does he even know what a movie is?

Yea, go figure on all the Roeper love at FilmJunkCentral. The guy was undeserving of that job, he didn’t have that ‘fuck-you Eeb’ vibe that Siskel had (sort of a passive aggressive button pushing that Ebert returned in kind to make for great TV if mediocre film criticism).

Roeper killed it for me. But then that is old news. Glad Roger Ebert’s typing fingers still work though, even though I agree with him less and less these days, I do like reading his stuff.

I stopped watching this show after Roeper gave LOTR: FOTR thumbs down and then later changed his mind after a lot of people expressed favorable opinions of the film. Fucking pushover. And both of them thought that Harry Potter was a better film! Good riddance to bad critics.

I hope they still do something together. Maybe another network will pick up the same show different name. I loved it. Roeper is great, and I still read Ebert’s reviews and they’re generally really solid.

I think blogs and film websites have also taken away the need for “legitimate” film critics. I think most people just log on to any number of sites daily to get the scoop about the latest movies and reviews. The format the Ebert and Roeper use is somewhat out-dated.

Even so, sad to see it go.
