Monday Morning Box Office Report: July 21, 2008

Well Bat-mania has struck once again, helping Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight to break the opening weekend record held by Spider-Man 3 as it took in a staggering $155 million in its first few days. Yes, just about everyone and their mother saw the movie over the weekend, which will surely challenge Iron Man and Indiana Jones 4 for top grossing movie of the year. Surprisingly, a few other movies did manage to make a bit of money over the weekend as well, including Mamma Mia! which earned $27 million itself. Hellboy II: The Golden Army had a pretty big drop off in its second week, as both Hancock and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D passed it to hold down the #3 and #4 positions. Space Chimps also managed to make over $7 million in its opening weekend.
1. The Dark Knight — $155M
2. Mamma Mia! — $27.6M
3. Hancock — $14M
4. Journey to the Center of the Earth — $11.9M
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army — $10M
6. WALL·E — $9.81M
7. Space Chimps — $7.35M
8. Wanted — $5.1M

For some reason, I wasn’t in the mood to see Batman this weekend. I feel a little comic movie’d out, even if it’s a really good one.
Posted by joe on July 21st, 2008I have friends in Chicago who weren’t even able to get tickets to see the Dark Knight all weekend because it was sold out even in regular theaters. I think that’s a good sign it’s going to keep on breaking box-office records thru next week.
Posted by Joel on July 21st, 2008After I saw Hellboy 2 I understood the big drop. It pretty much blew.
