Rob Cohen Wants to Remake 80’s Cult Classic The Monster Squad?

Here’s another remake rumour that’s sure to get a few people fuming. According to Bloody Disgusting, Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, Stealth, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) is interested in remaking Fred Dekker’s cult classic 80’s flick The Monster Squad, which was released on DVD for the first time just last summer. Paramount owns the remake rights, and Cohen will apparently be producing, but not directing.
As much as I love the original, I actually think this is a great idea. It’s not a movie that a ton of people have seen, and it is precisely the kind of movie that kids are missing out on nowadays. Of course, part of what made Dekker’s version so great was the low budget aesthetic and the practical effects, so this may be another situation where too much reliance on CG could be a concern. Either way, I think it’s worth a shot. I’m very interested to see what comes of this. Plus, if it’s a success, we may also be one step closer to that Goonies sequel they’ve been talking about for so many years!

Usually I don’t care about remakes but for this I have to say FUCK NO!
Posted by swarez on July 16th, 2008There is no way in hell Cohen will be able to capture what Dekker did back in the day.
The film works because of the great script which didn’t talk down to its viewer. It will be a cold day in hell when kids in films today will be able to utter the words, Fag, Homo or chicken shit.
Fuck this remake idea, fuck it in its stupid ass.
sean, i love ya, but its NOT a great idea. come on! God dammit things are bad…how did they get this bad? The industry is like a festering leg wound that wont heal.
Posted by Bob the Slob on July 16th, 2008I hadn’t heard of Monster Squad until this moment so I’m glad I won’t have any hate for Cohen when he fucks it up. I mean come on…Rob Cohen is so horribly bland.
Posted by Ryan M. on July 16th, 2008I will personally commit seppuku with my sword if Rob Cohen touches one frame of Monster Squad!
On second thought, I guess it’s not that big a deal really.

At this point, it’s not even worth getting riled up over. If they do it– everyone knows it will be a watered down piece of shit. Oh well. I still have the original to watch, and as for the remake? I’ll just not watch it. Plain and simple.
Unless the remake actually shows the wolfman’s nards.
Posted by Jon Rocks on July 16th, 2008While The Monster Squad is far (FAR!) from a perfect film, I’ll echo Swarez in that the amount of swearing, smoking and things that don’t make it into kids movie at all give the film a flavour that you will not see in any remake.
I was happy enough that the film finally came out on DVD a while ago. The world doesn’t need a remake which would drown out the main thing (for me) that makes the film interesting.
Posted by Kurt on July 16th, 2008man i coulda seen a remake happening a mile away but rob cohen? i jus have a feeling its gonna have loads of cgi and we wont give a shit about the characters, but i havent seen mummy 3 yet so i cant judge completely, but mostly this sounds like a bad idea, damn i was hopin for a straight to video sequel,it would have been alot better than this
