Marvel Hires New Writer for Iron Man 2

While most Iron Man fans were no doubt happy to hear that Jon Favreau had finally signed on the dotted line for Iron Man 2, they may not be completely out of the woods yet. It seems that Marvel has decided to make another key change in the team that is bringing the sequel to the big screen, choosing a different writer to pen the script (possibly in response to Jon Favreau’s increased salary). Actor Justin Theroux is the man who has landed the gig, having only co-written one prior screenplay for the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder.
While Tropic Thunder does seem to be getting a lot of good early buzz, it does seems strange that they wouldn’t bring back at least part of the first Iron Man’s writing staff, which included Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, First Snow) along with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Punisher: War Zone). At the very least, Theroux will have proven that he can write comedy, which was a key component of Favreau’s first Iron Man flick, but can he also write a decent comic book plot? Hey, how hard can it be?! I’m curious to see if Iron Man fans complain as loudly about this as they did about Jon Favreau’s hold out.

While Iron Man was a really good origin story, it lacked a little in the films last 20 minutes. I didn’t think the film had a great adversary for him to battle in the last act. The biggest challenge will be coming up with a villian to give the sequel a more menancing tone. Im sure Favreau will have control of that decision!
Posted by entertainmenttodayandbeyond on July 16th, 2008I didn’t even know Theroux was a writer. If Tropic Thunder rules, then I guess this is a good thing. The only thing I really liked him in was in Mulholland Dr.
Posted by Primal on July 16th, 2008Yeah, it’s nothing to weep about, as the first film, whilst having some good ideas, was hardly a perfect screenplay.
Having said that, I do like it when a whole team is kept together for sequels…although only when it’s worth it!
