Monday Morning Box Office Report – July 14th, 2008

Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy II just barely edged out Hancock for the #1 box office spot this past weekend, which was probably not so much a lack of interest in HB2 but rather an indication of Will Smith’s insane mass market appeal. Journey to the Center of the Earth also did some decent business, bringing in $20 million in its opening weekend and proving that maybe there really is a future for gimmicky 3-D films after all. Wall-E held down the #4 spot, while Wanted rounded out the top 5. Eddie Murphy’s Meet Dave unfortunately could not repeat the magic of Norbit (most likely because this is the middle of the summer, not the dead of February), and opened at the #7 spot with just $5.3 mil. Yay!

1. Hellboy II: The Golden Army — $35.9M
2. Hancock — $33M
3. Journey to the Center of the Earth — $20.6M
4. WALL·E — $18.5M
5. Wanted — $11.6M
6. Get Smart — $7.11M
7. Meet Dave — $5.3M
8. Kung Fu Panda — $4.3M $202M
9. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl — $2.36M

  1. I think Hancock got a lot more marketing (at least from what got to my eyes), and just looked cooler in trailers, IMO. I saw Hellboy and it was ok. Dark Knight will probably blow if out of the water next week. I’m sure it will at least box office-wise.

  2. I was afraid of this. I’m pretty sure that it won’t reach 100 mills in the states, maybe barely crawl over 60. Sad indeed.
This means we will have to wait for at least 3 years for that Mountain of Madness flick since I’m sure that The Hobbit will be the first sure fire box office smash he will be involved in.

  3. No surprises here.
