Barbie Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds

Hey, whoever said that wasting money on nerdy movie collectibles was a pastime that only guys should indulge in? Finally, ladies have a toy to adorn their cubicles as well… that’s right, it’s the 45th Anniversary Edition Barbie Doll based on Tippi Hedren’s likeness in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds! This is no joke my friends, it’s an actual Barbie doll that Mattel will be releasing in October. Of course, the write-up over at Entertainment Earth certainly doesn’t do much to convince us that it’s not a joke:

“This Barbie is for The Birds! Actually, this Barbie from The Birds is for you! Celebrating Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, this incredible collector’s doll features our heroine being attacked by a trio of fine feathered foes, just like in the movie. Will these plastic birds damage her delightful handbag or her carefully styled hair? We certainly hope not!”

It even comes with “real fake birds”, whatever that means. Heck, I’d buy this just for a laugh if the price tag wasn’t $44.99. Ouch. McFarlane Toys are way cheaper… plus they have more blood spatter. Get your act together Mattel, who do you think is buying this stuff?

  1. I actually think this is pretty gutsy for a company that is world renowned for making the prissy and uptight icon known as Barbie.
They’re clearly taking the light-hearted approach in explaining this decision to their longtiome Barbie fans with lines like “Will these plastic birds damage her delightful handbag or her carefully styled hair?”, while in the next scene of the picture above she might as well be dead with her eyes pecked out.
I read that some car makers will not license their cars to be featured in video games where the player can massively demage the cars (like Burnout, Flatout, and Stuntman.) If that’s true then that would certainly make Mattel braver by comparison.
I still don’t know who would buy these dolls though, what with the high price, nature of Barbie fans, non-fans’ repulsion for Barbie products, and lack of gore. Maybe Barbie-Hitchcock fans who have no idea what things are worth. But whoever buys it would be very wise to keep in it the packaging.

  2. Madame Alexander released a similar doll a few years back. They even had a Psycho version. I hope Mattel follows their lead.

And I imagine these film-themed Barbie dolls do fairly well with collectors or they wouldn’t keep making them. I worked at a toy store about a decade back, and the film series Barbis were almost twice as expensive as this one.

  3. “real fake birds” that’s awesome.

  4. I’m buying this for sure.

    Man, I’m never growing up.

  5. I like the bird pecking her cooch.
