ElfQuest Comes to the Big Screen

Alright, so I’m a big enough nerd to have a vague idea of what ElfQuest is, but I’m not a big enough nerd to have actually read any of the comics or played the role-playing game. It started as a comic book created Wendy and Richard Pini in the late 70’s, about a group of magical hippie elves living on a planet with two moons. Despite the cute appearance of the characters, the comics were aimed at adults and drew controversy early on when they incorporated sexual themes.

So after trying to get a live action ElfQuest movie off the ground since the 80’s, it appears that they may have finally succeeded. Warner Brothers have hired Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) to direct the flick. Wait a minute… the guy who did Dodgeball is directing this? Strangely, a quick glance at his filmography indicates that he is getting into slightly more serious gigs, including an upcoming adaptation of the Michael Chabon book The Mysteries of Pittsburgh. At any rate, it’s nice to hear that we may be getting a fantasy movie that isn’t aimed at kids for once. I only hope the mythology behind it isn’t as convoluted as it sounds.

  1. I always thought the art for ElfQuest was terrible so I’ve only read one issue. This Thurber guy could fuck it up royally and it wouldn’t matter because there are only three ElfQuest fans in the world to get pissed off about it. Seriously, I’ve never heard anyone say anything about ElfQuest in real life or on the internet (until now).

  2. Google “ElfQuest”….you’ll get over a million hits. Guess those three ElfQuest fans in the world have been busy little worker bees, haven’t they?

I guess what I’m trying to say is “Bitter much, troll?” Grow up, already.

  3. I Guess I am one of the Three, I have loved the stories of the Wolfriders for 20 plus years, and cannot wait for the movie to come out. I am guessinf a movie company would not put up millions if there wasn’t a market for it.

  4. Just because Elfquest isn’t your gig doesn’t mean no one cares. Just means you don’t matter in this instance. I’ve loved Elfquest since I first encountered it in middle school, and I have children in or graduated from high school. A fan doesn’t need to be rabid, nor do they have to have YOUR tastes.

That said, I will believe there will be a movie made when I start seeing the hype trailers for it.
