Bangkok Dangerous: Even More Ridiculous Than Wanted?
Before (or was it after?) we recorded this week’s podcast, Jay, Greg and I happened to be talking briefly about the upcoming remake of Bangkok Dangerous starring Nicolas Cage, and I had been meaning to post this particular clip from the movie that has been floating around the web. It shows a boat chase scene with some pretty over-the-top action, and it got me thinking in terms of Wanted (which I liked!) and whether or not Bangkok Dangerous is going to be equally as exaggerated.
The fact that it stars Nicolas Cage automatically makes for a strong possibility of this movie being “so bad it’s good”, but it’s directed by the Pang Brothers (who also did the original) and I do think they’re talented filmmakers even if they tend to get a little carried away at times. What do you think? Does this scene make you more or less interested in the movie? And am I the only one who is reminded of Rambo a bit here?

Hadn’t seen that scene before, but I sure liked it. I loved the fact that it has the violence of cutting off the guy’s hand, but then when he actually kills him, you only see those (always) cool bullets shooting through the water coming out of the bottom of the boat.
Looks for John Woo-ish to me. Love the Pang Brothers, but never saw the original BD (great title). Is it the original any good?

Posted by Primal on July 8th, 2008I also love the bullet arcs at the end. Vintage pang brothers visuals. The problem with the Pangs is usually in the storytelling not in the visuals. I like how they compose their scenes.
I don’t see the connection to Wanted though…I don’t think the BD remake is nearly as over the top or CGI enhanced as Wanted.
Posted by kurt on July 8th, 2008I was on holiday and finally got around to seeing Wanted. Jay, I couldn’t agree with you more: What a pile of poo. I had to go home and watch scenes from The Road Warrior just to get the awful taste out of my mouth.

I just don’t understand why a good filmmaker would want to remake their own film but since this is not some shot-for-shot Funny Games bullshit I’ll give it a chance because I did enjoy the gore.
+Nicholas Cage would probably look less ridiculous if he never got that hair transplant in the first place. He looked so retarded in Next.
