Sacha Baron Cohen to Play Sherlock Holmes with Will Ferrell as Watson!
Hey, remember that Sherlock Holmes movie that Guy Ritchie reportedly signed on to direct last month? Well, it’s about to have some serious competition… and by serious I mean not serious at all. Judd Apatow is also producing a Sherlock Holmes flick of his own, but his version is going to be a comedy with Sacha Baron Cohen starring as Holmes and Will Ferrell as Dr. Watson! How’s that for a shocker? A director has not yet been announced, but Etan Cohen (Idiocracy, Tropic Thunder) will be writing the script.
While this is yet another example of Hollywood releasing movies in pairs, it is interesting that they are both completely different takes on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective. One will be completely gritty and action-packed, while the other will be goofy and hilarious. All I know is that the combination of Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell together on screen could possibly result in death by laughter. I sure hope they’ve thought this through!

Posted by Matt on July 2nd, 2008Oh wow, this is seriously awesome! I’ve been waiting for Sacha Baron Cohen to play the starring role in a movie based on a character he didn’t create for some time.
The only thing is: Can Will Ferrell do an honest-to-God British accent or will it be mockingly fake like the German or whatever accent he did in The Producers? Also, can Cohen overshadow the established Will Ferrell as most of the world don’t really know Cohen as Cohen?
I for one believe that Cohen can trump Ferrell and that his career hasn’t even reached it’s peak yet (and that’s saying something). I think he is more humorous and definitely more innovative than any comedian of the past ten years. Da Ali G Show is one of about ten shows that has made me laugh out loud in my adult lifetime. (However, I do frown at Ali G’s Indahouse.)
Posted by Ryan on July 2nd, 2008This could be funny. The key word there is “could”. When I imagine a humorous Sherlock Holmes movie, I’d much rather see something along the lines of Simon Pegg as Holmes and Nick Frost as Watson.

I have nothing against Will Ferrel playing the same,plain,boring comedic performances each movie, but Sacha!?!??! I digress, Both guys can act,given the correct material,Will(Stranger than Fiction,Funnyordie.com Skits) and Sacha ( Sweeney Todd). Yet every week it seems like week we get “Will Ferrel as…( sports player who can’t play”……Enough!
Posted by Guy on July 3rd, 2008Well I don’t think Sherlock Holmes or Watson play any sports, but that’s a good point about them being together in Talladega Nights. The difference is that they will be paired up as hero and sidekick in this movie, which has a lot of potential if you ask me.
