Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan = Splitsville?

Well this is embarrassing. Not even a week after the announcement that Robert Rodriguez had signed on to direct a new Red Sonja movie as a starring vehicle for his fiancee Rose McGowan, all of the gossip sites are reporting that the couple have officially broken up. The falling out supposedly has something to do with Rodriguez’s inability to secure funding for a Barbarella remake, although that seems a bit odd to me. Perhaps McGowan only hooked up with Rodriguez on the condition that he would make her a big star, and decided to ditch him when that wasn’t panning out.
I still don’t know if I completely buy the story, but a lot of people are hailing this as great news since McGowan was starting to become his very own Yoko Ono. It’s true that Robert Rodriguez had essentially put everything on hold (including Sin City 2) in favour of finding new projects for her to star in. He wanted to direct Barbarella with her as the lead, but no studios were willing to front the $70 million he was asking (and understandably so). I wonder if this means they are still contractually obligated to do Red Sonja together? I’m guessing that would be a little awkward. Either way, I’m sure Elizabeth Avellan, Rodriguez’s former wife of 16 years is having a little celebration of her own this week in response to the news.

I can’t wait to hear Jay rant about this when you force him to give an opinion on it in the next podcast.
Posted by Matt Gamble on July 2nd, 2008This is probably for the best as far as Rodriguez’s future film work is concerned. With all of the announcements surrounding Rodriguez-helmed, McGowan-centric movies, I was beginning to worry that his judgement may become clouded. I’d still love to see Red Sonja and Barbarella films from Rodriguez, but perhaps with some different leading ladies who are a bit more capable of carrying a film.
Posted by Rian on July 2nd, 2008Good. Maybe now he can get back to making films instead of trying to set up projects for his no talent girlfriend.
Posted by Jon Rocks on July 2nd, 2008I think one of the things a person must avoid after plastic surgery is the sun. I guess all that Latin Heat was too much for McGowan.
Posted by Primal on July 2nd, 2008I never questioned his judgment as it has always been clouded as confirmed by: Spy Kids. Shark Boy and Lava Girl. Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Constantly swallowing semen. Vampires that dance senselessly in the background rather than fight. Voiceover that only serves to reiterate whats on screen. Feces direct from the tap.
So yeah, he should stick with making 100% intentionally cheesy and senseless films like Planet Terror and then I’ll like him more.
Posted by Ryan on July 3rd, 2008LOL, I can’t believe what a dunce Rodriguez was. I get it. She’s pretty. But she’s not pretty enough to risk/put your career on hold. I think it’s unanimous that this move is for the best (if it’s true.) Now, Robert, go out there, stop wasting everybody’s time, and make Sin City 2. Ny dollars aren’t going to spend themselves.
Posted by Matt on July 3rd, 2008I don’t even think Rose McGowan is pretty. Seriously. There are many other starlets with which he could have ruined his family life. He should have at least chosen one that doesn’t resemble Michael Jackson.
