The Tale of Despereaux Trailer Starring Matthew Broderick

With Wall-E in theatres this weekend, it makes sense that trailers for the next round of CG kids’ movies are arriving at the same time. Dreamworks’ The Tale of Despereaux is based on the book by Kate DiCamillo, about a mouse who befriends a castle’s princess. I can’t say this trailer really does much for me, as it looks like a cross between Ratatouille and Bee Movie. Is it just me or are Dreamworks always playing catch up to Pixar? The voice cast includes Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson, Dustin Hoffman and Sigourney Weaver, and it is directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away), Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) and Robert Stevenhagen. Check out the trailer below. The Tale of Despereaux hits theatres on December 19th.

  1. Can’t say I’m too impressed with the preview.

  2. I thought the mice looked very cute. And I don’t use that word very often. While this movie may not look groundbreaking, it certainly looks better than Dreamworks’ Shrek, which I didn’t care for at all. Yes, I get it, don’t judge a book by its cover. jeez.

  3. I would see this. Looks okay. Just okay.

  4. It is not just you Sean, Dreamworks is seemingly playing catch up with Pixar alot. Pixar rules the game while Dreamworks imitates. Pixar does A Bugs Life then Dreamworks does Antz. Now they do this shit right after Ratatouille. Is it possible they went into production before Ratatouille was announced? It takes four years to make one of these things so I doubt it.

Hopefully no one goes to see it so we can finally get a CG Bone movie rather than stupid shit starring some species of the animal kingdom over and over again.

  5. it’s not Dreamworks. It’s Universal – and it’s a huge Best-Selling Book.

  6. Actually orca is right, it’s not Dreamworks… my bad. And I think Dreamworks released Antz before A Bug’s Life actually. But there always seems to be a lot of repetition with these CG movies either way.

  7. Dude… it’s a Universal film.

  8. Despereaux is original. And it’s art. The best sort of story a grownup can share with a kid. It’s sassy. Funny. And heartbreaking. Skip the cynicism. Find a kid who could use a little light in his or her life — and remember to point out what you LIKE about the movie, which will add another layer to the enjoyment for both you and the child.
