Robert Rodriguez to Direct Red Sonja Starring Rose McGowan

Over the past year or so, it seems like pretty much every project Robert Rodriguez has shown an interest in was somehow connected with his main squeeze Rose McGowan. Obviously his main concern is working with her and making her a big star at this point, and now the latest scoop is that he will do it by bringing back Red Sonja to the big screen. Red Sonja is sort of a spin-off character from the world of Conan The Barbarian, and was previously played by Brigitte Nielsen in a 1985 film that co-starred Arnold Schwarzenegger (not as Conan though). It bombed at the box office, and even Schwarzenegger admitted it was bad: “Now, when my kids get out of line, they’re sent to their room and forced to watch Red Sonja ten times. I never have too much trouble with them.”

It is unclear if the new movie will be more closely based on the comic books by Dynamite Entertainment, or if they might try to connect it to the new Conan movie that they’ve been trying to get off the ground for a few years now. Either way, I am definitely interested to see Rodriguez try his hand at a sword and sorcery flick. I just wish he would make up his mind and get working on something. What the heck is going on with Sin City 2, anyway?

  1. I will see this movie if it comes out. The thing that gets me about this story is that Rodriguez seems to only want to do movies with Rose McGowan as the star these days. He’s been rumored to be making a Barbarella remake with her as well, correct? I like Rodriguez and I don’t mind McGowan, but I fear that she may be clouding his judgement. I mean, look what happened to Guy Ritchie when he made a movie just to give Madonna something to do. McGowan was good as the over-the-top B movie style action star in Planet Terror, but she hasn’t really convinced me that she’s an actress worthy of carrying movies on her own. Then again, I guess Barbarella and Red Sonja are both in the same corny, violence and sex driven camp that Planet Terror was, aren’t they? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

  2. Yeah, I don’t think Red Sonja should be done in any serious light if McGowan stars in it. It’ll have to be based on camp and cheese or otherwise I can’t see her kicking anyone’s ass.

As for Sin City 2, I’d rather it not happen. The use of voiceover was so horribly bad I couldn’t stand it. Bruce Willis sits at a bar and looks over at Jessica Alba dancing. The voiceover goes something like: “I sit down and look over at her, and she is beautiful.” We see you sitting, we see you looking, and we see that shes beautiful! There is such a thing as being too close to the source material.

  3. He is going to make a shit movie just so he could give his ugly, untalented girlfiend a role. Lame.
