Richard Kelly’s The Box Delayed Until September 2009

When it comes down to it, I’m not still not sure what to think of Richard Kelly as a director. I enjoyed his debut Donnie Darko quite a bit, although with repeat viewings I found that it lost some of its lustre. Southland Tales was, without question, an awkward, incomprehensible mess, but it did have some elements that I kind of dug. His next movie, The Box, is thankfully a bit less ambitious, and sounds like something I would definitely be into, but after this week’s announcement that Warner Brothers have delayed it to September 2009, I can’t help but wonder what it might mean.

Over at Cinematical, they are quick to point out that September is usually a month where studios dump movies that they don’t have any confidence in. On the other hand, sometimes I think people read too much into delays. It could be that they need more time for special effects, or it could be that they just don’t want to compete with some of the other movies that were scheduled for February. It is interesting though, that the story is based on a Twilight Zone episode written by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), and after M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening has been unfavourably compared to a b-movie/sci-fi serial. Perhaps they are scared about how this movie will be received? Let’s hope they don’t get cold feet and give it a really small release. The Box stars James Marsden, Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella, and is now scheduled to hit theatres on September 11th, 2009.

  1. September 2009! That is ages away. I was looking forward to seeing this movie. I guess I’ll just have to forget about it now for a year or so.

I do hope it isn’t delayed because they think it is a piece of rubbish as I’d like Richard Kelly to show that he isn’t a one hit wonder.

  2. I’m looking forward to this movie for the concept alone. I could take or leave Marsden and Cameron, and so far Kelly has made one movie I’ve quite liked and one movie I’ve quite disliked, so the everything is up in the air right now. The Idea is enough for me at this point more than a year from it’s release.

  3. Good concept…for a 30–minute twilight zone episode! Not a 2-hour movie.
