New To Theatres This Weekend – June 20, 2008

It’s the battle of two comedic giants this weekend, as Steve Carell stars in the adaptation of the TV series Get Smart, while Mike Myers returns with The Love Guru, his first on-screen appearance since 2003’s The Cat in the Hat. I’m guessing it won’t really be much of a battle, but I am curious to see how many loyal fans Mike Myers has been able to retain throughout the years. Once again, almost no alternatives to the two major blockbusters this weekend either… the Genghis Khan biopic Mongol is expanding to just under 100 screens, while Brick Lane and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl open on only a handful of theatres each.

  1. My prediction is that critics will hate or have mixed feelings about both The Love Guru and Get Smart. But Get Smart will do at least twice as well at the box office than The Love Guru.

  2. I’m seeing Grindhouse again this weekend. It’s playing as a midnight showing and is the original cut for theaters.

  3. ps. I’m gonna see Mongol maybe next week or later. Looks good.

  4. Joe, you lucky dog. I would pay good money for that experience again.

  5. I already saw The Incredible Hulk (twice) and The Happening, so I think I’ll take this week off from the theater since I’ll be catching Wall-E and Wanted next week. My wallet and I could use the rest.
