Josh Brolin is the New Snake Plissken?

First, the bad news: it looks like that infernal remake of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York isn’t going away anytime soon. A while back, Brett Ratner had signed on to direct and Gerard Butler was attached to star, but eventually they both walked away and the project was thought to have been finished. But then they hired Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, U-571) to rewrite the script, and now there is a juicy rumour floating around the web that they may have a new Snake Plissken in mind too.
Which leads me to the good news. According to French site Spielberg News (don’t ask me what this story has to do with Steven Spielberg), the current front runner for the role of Snake Plissken is Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, American Gangster). Now, once again, I can’t say I support this remake at all, but if it does have to happen, Josh Brolin would likely be enough to get me out to the theatre to see it. He could definitely pull it off, don’t you think? For the moment, I’d take the rumour with a grain of salt. On the other hand, Brolin is supposedly starring as the Terminator in Terminator 4: Salvation, and since Mostow directed T3… maybe there’s a connection? Okay, I know I’m grasping at straws here. What can I say? I desperately want this to be true. What do you think?

That Brolin is starring in T4 is a lot more interesting to me than him starring in EfNY. Maybe because I never saw any of the Escape movies. Who is he going to be playing in T4? Is Christian Bale going to be John Connor? Will Mostow direct T4? I really hope he doesn’t. He made Arnold’s performance in T3 just abysmal. It reminded me of Arnold in Jingle all the Way. ugh.
Posted by Matt on June 20th, 2008Brolin is the Terminator (not sure if this is confirmed or not), Bale is John Connor, and McG is directing.
Posted by Sean on June 20th, 2008McG?!!! Oh god, no! And what a great title: Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Who came up with that? Ed Wood? OK. Maybe it’s not going to be that bad. Maybe I’m just over-reacting. But Brolin as the Terminator is definately worth looking forward to. Lets hope for the best.
Posted by Matt on June 20th, 2008Well, if they’re going to re-do this film they could do much worse than Brolin for Snake. I just hope they don’t backtrack to more Butler/Ratner talk.
Posted by Marina on June 20th, 2008I like brolin alot, but I am very adamant in my belief that if an actor originated a character on screen that is a SCREEN ORIGINAL CHARACTER (so not harry potter, james bond, jack ryan or frodo…but like Robocop, Indy, John McClane, Peewee, The Dude…etc.) that that actor IS (no fucking exceptions…IS!!!!) that character…Bruce Campbell is Ash, Robert Englund is Freddy, Michael J. Fox is Marty and Kurt Russell IS Snake Plissken…no fucking arguments…fucking hollywood…fucking kids and their fucking music…GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!…sorry for the language.
Posted by Bob the Slob on June 20th, 2008I can totally see Josh Brolin in the role.
Posted by Cinexcellence on June 20th, 2008Woah bob calm down, it’s just a couple of shitty movies we’re talking about here. It’s not the end of the world.
Posted by Paul on June 20th, 2008paul, haha, I know…I still stand by my point…but the CAPS and the exclaimation points are just for effect…all this movie discussion is in good fun, at least for me, and I hope for everyone else as well.
Posted by Bob the Slob on June 20th, 2008I was ok with the selection of Gerard Butler, but it the Josh Brolin rumor is true, I’m genuinely interested in seeing this film made.
Posted by Rian on June 20th, 2008I do agree that Brolin is a very good choice but I really dont see the point in a remake, like recent sequels Die hard,Indiana Jones and the glut of horror remakes it’s all about branding, name recognition for the mass audiences nomater if they are familiar with the actual movie or not. Escape is an excellent genre movie which I dont really want to see get raped by Ratner or whoever. I’m not a Ratner hater i just believe his filmmaking has no personality. I would much rather see Carpenter have another crack at a sequel, cut the budget in half and get Russell on board. If Ford and Willis arent getting to old for this shit! then why should Russell.
Posted by Lee on June 20th, 2008lee…amen brother!
Posted by Bob The Slob on June 21st, 2008Yebb. I agree. Do a low budget Escape movie with Carpenter and Russel.
Posted by Swarez on June 21st, 2008Brolin is a bad ass no doubt but Russel is Plisken for life.
What about aaron eckhart? He played Harvey Dent in The dark knight.
