Robotech Movie Lands a Writer

Here’s some potentially big news on the Robotech front. As you may have heard, Tobey Maguire is supposedly producing a Robotech movie based on the popular 80’s animated series (no doubt a direct result of giant robot mania from Michael Bay’s Transformers). A guy named Craig Zahler had been recruited to write the script, but that was all we had heard up until now.
But now, according to CHUD, a new writer has just been brought on board, and it’s someone that has plenty of geek cred. Lawrence Kasdan started his career penning the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back, and then went on to write Raiders of the Lost Ark as well, before getting into junk like The Bodyguard and Dreamcatcher. Word on the street is that Kasdan is putting in a rewrite on Robotech… but does he have what it takes to make this an epic space opera? It would appear so, although I’m not sure that the screenplays for Empire or Raiders are what made those films so special. What do you think… are you looking forward to a Robotech movie, and does this add to your excitement?

I’ve been waiting for the announcement of a new mecha movie. The great thing about mechs is that shiny metal looks real with CGI. I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion would be first but Robotech is certainly good enough. It has the potential to blow Transformers away with a .44 Magnum because it actually has characterization to build off of. Lawrence Kasdan better read the books too or some geeks are gonna have an aneurysm.

Posted by Maikan on June 14th, 2008Why would they bother? The only reason why Transformers was greelit was because it had a huge, built-in Western fanbase which grew up with the show in the 80s. And thus ended up making an obscene amount of money.
Robotech has never had that level of exposure in North America, the only way they can possibly hope to recreate Transformers’s success is with very bankable stars and a lot of marketing.
