I Dream of Jeannie: The Movie

When it comes to 60’s sitcoms, I don’t think there are too many out there that would translate well to the big screen today. Even Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman couldn’t save Bewitched from mediocrity, and although I think Get Smart has potential, it will probably end up being pretty middle-of-the-road as well. Now an I Dream of Jeannie movie is apparently in the works, and I can’t for the life of me understand why anyone would want to see it!
I suppose it all comes down to nostalgia… although I remember watching re-runs as a kid, the show was actually before my time. But I mean, seriously… an astronaut who has his own personal female genie/slave? How can they even pull something like that off nowadays without it seeming sexist? According to The Hollywood Reporter, a script has been written by Rita Hsiao (Mulan, Toy Story 2, Enchanted), and she has supposedly “created a Jeannie that is ’smack in the middle’ of contemporary times and circumstances”. I guess we’ll see what happens. I can see it appealing to the baby boomers, but younger audiences may need a little convincing.
