Wham! Movie Might Not Happen… Does Anyone Care?

If you grew up in the 80’s, there was probably a time where you found yourself singing along with one of the many irresistible hit songs performed by the pop group Wham!. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go… Careless Whisper… Everything She Wants… the list goes on. Of course, if you grew up after the 80’s, you might very well wonder what kind of world would have ever let these guys become such massive stars. Hey, it was a different time back then. There was a lot of cocaine going around. What else can we say?

Well at any rate, it seems that there has been talk of a Wham! biopic lately, a movie that would retell the story of the band’s rise to fame, and specifically cover the height of their popularity between ‘83 and ‘85. The problem is that in order to tell the story properly, they would need access to the band’s music, and George Michael does not seem likely to give permission without having control over the script as well. The band’s former manager Simon Napier-Bell is the one trying to get the movie off the ground, and he doesn’t seem too confident that it will work out.

“There are several people sniffing around my Wham! film, but I’m not sure any of them will come off because they all require Wham! music in them and George controls that. He will have the yes or no on each script presented. George would want control.”

Perhaps he should take it as a sign that this movie is just not meant to be. Is there really an audience for something like this? Besides, Michael has already had his say with the authorized documentary George Michael: A Different Story, and no offense, but does anyone actually care about the other guy?

  1. Oh God NO!!! Kidding aside, who is the other guy anyway? When I first saw the picture, I thought it was a movie about a couple of Elvis impersonators.

  2. I didn’t recognize who they were either. If anything, George Micheal in an 80’s setting film but they already did that with Billy Idol in The Wedding Singer. I could care less for a biopic.

  3. I don;t think this even needs to be said, but I don;t think anyone will miss this one. Wham! weren’t even that big of a band.

  4. Andrew Ridgley could probably use the cash.

  5. First off, “Freedom” is my jam, and this movie would probably be huge in Europe. But yeah, no reason for it to be made other than possibly make some money.
